FKL - [No.4 - Up Yours]

Last updated: 19th Dec 2008

Music Genres: dubstep

Description:
No. 4, aka Static Itch, aka Raj “I got your bass right here” J.I., has come a long way this year. He’s broken ground in the realms of production and composition with a recently release EP, “Acid Singes” as well as exploring and mastering the art of the crafted mixset with various styles including industrial, indie rock, IDM, and of course dubstep. I wonder who’s gonna be the first to book him when he returns to KL… Where ever it is, be sure you get some video for the Foundation Raj!

No. 4 hits us with a ground quaking, bass quenched dubstep banger of a set for the Winter Solstice season. Tracks from the likes of Ramadanman, N-Type, Darqwan, Plastician, and one of my new favorties Milanese, are sure to keep your head bobbin as you squat-step to this cypher. All I can say is Blaze dis one and enjoy…

[FKL] DJ Escape’s blazing mix for December

Last updated: 17th Dec 2008

Music Genres: dnb

Description:
I love finding new talent for the Foundation and I have found a wikked DJ for your listening pleasure straight from the Western Midlands, UK. Escape aka Courtney Holder brings the ruckus on his December mix. This digital dynamo opens strong with a 15 minute neurofunk/tech-step opener, subtley leads us into some ragga and pure roots music for another 15 minutes, and then rinses out for a good 40 minute blend of diverse and banging tunes. Track selection is premier with the likes of Northen Lights, Cabbie & Crystal Clear, Drumsound & Bassline Smith, Original Sin, Serial Killers, Benny Page, Influx Datum, Shy Fx and Pleasure represented. I’m warning you now, once you start listening to this mix, you won’t be able to resist listening to it all the way through, skankin, breakin, or however your dancin’, till you’re a puddle of breathless sweat and ringing eardums.

[FKL][Expansion] Artihc - Patiens [003]

Last updated: 17th Dec 2008

Music Genres: minimal, techno,

Description:
Our next Expansion participant hails from the island of Singapore. Firman Chitra a.k.a Artihc has been DJ-ing for the past 8 years with the motivation to “create a singular experience for the ears, feet, mind, body & soul” and can be found regularly dropping beats at the Supperclub(SG) with our very own EJ .

‘Patiens’ is presented very much like a tapestry of minimalistic tunes that are surtured together with delicate, pin-point accuracy and progressively bound by elements that are deep, techy and downright pulsating to the bone. The overall hypnoticism is further enhanced by tunes from the likes of Dubfire, Steve Lawler, Thomas Schumacher, Cirez D and Format B. This is a set that is made to imbue and infuse and it does it well.

So, download away and remember to leave us your thoughts. As with our other Expansion participants, stats for ‘Patiens’ will be monitored for a period of one week.

Let’s go!

[FKL][Expansion] DJ Trashcutter - Trashcutz 003 [002]

Last updated: 11th Dec 2008

Music Genres: Hardstyle, techno, trance

Description:
Brace yourselves. Dj Trashcutter is our next Expansion participant and he has come out with all guns blazing. Blasting some big noise out of Germany, our mixologist packs a huge sonic wallop with ‘Trashcutz 003′. Armed with some really impressive mixing skills, Trashcutter has sculpted a dynamic Hardstyle set that is peppered with Trance, Techno and even Goa influences.

This vinyl enthusiast is also a bit of a tease, progressively building up and dutifully blowing your socks off towards the end. Essentially Trashcutter has created a set that is uplifting, dark, rapturous and bumping; all at the same time. Structured with tunes from the likes of Maurizio Braccagni, Mauro Piccoto, Dj Shoko, Mario Piu, Reflex and even Johan Gielen, this is a solid example of the effort Trashcutter has put into developing his sound, 5 years after purchasing his very first vinyl.

As usual, let us know what you think of the mix. The stats for ‘Trashcutz 003′ will be monitored for a period of one week, so you know what you have to do people!

[FKL][Expansion] DJ Evo - This Is Love [001]

Last updated: 10th Dec 2008

Music Genres: Trance

Description:
Dj Evo steps up as our first Expansion participant. This freelance dancer cum DJ gives us a dose of euphoric trance, something we haven’t had on The Foundation in a while come to think of it, with ‘This Is Love’. Here’s a little blurb about the boy:

“Starting at the age of 16, DJ Evo was exposed to new sounds after his first few visits to clubs in KL. He begain to collect Hard Trance and produce mixsets on his computer. Successfully producing his first mixset entitled ‘Resonance’ he moved to slower genre - Trance with lots of vocals. DJ Evo has made appearances in alot of small parties and a couple of clubs in Johor. His guest mix entitled ‘This Is Love’ also appear on Radio Kul episode 057.”

Though not a particularly long set (just over 30 mins), it gives one an idea of the sounds that inspire DJ Evo and it includes heavyweight numbers from Armin Van Buuren, ATB and Above & Beyond.

Give the mix a listen and leave us your thoughts. Remember the number of responses are also an integral part of the final tally that will decide the winners of the Expansion. Stats will be monitored for a period of one week.

Let’s kick this into high gear!

[FKL] Dj Moet - Look Ma, No Headphones

Last updated: 2nd Dec 2008

Music Genres: breaks, house

Description:
Our boy Pascal a.k.a Dj Möet brings a little retrospection this time around with Look Ma, No Headphones that revisits some of the sounds that have influenced him over the years.

Drawing inspiration from straight and broken beats alike, Möet creates a visage that tapers between big ballsy funk and deep, hypnotic cuts. And boy does it take you back!

Dylan Rhymes reworks JDS. Hi 8 gets down with Dan F & Jariten. M.I.Loki tears it up with Plaza de Funk and Armand van Helden takes on Felix Da Housecat. And that’s just half the list.

Sexy Meow indeed!

[FKL] Zaskar - Bunohan

Last updated: 2nd Dec 2008

Music Genres: minimal techno, microhouse

Description:
We haven’t heard from Zaskar in a while but, oh boy, was the wait worth it. Our maestro of all things minimal and micro delivers yet another killer set, this time with ‘Bunohan’.

Showcasing explicitly precise mixing techniques, homeboy has fabricated one heck of set that weaves together an intricate collection of minimal tech and microhouse tunes from the likes of Luciano & Mirko, Marc Antona, Jorge Savoretti and Gernot Lange; filled with all the pulsating, throbbing yummyness one can expect from Zaskar’s sets.

Personal favourite moment? Fergie’s sick rework of King Unique’s ‘Hinode’. Absolutely blistering drop.

[FKL] Sirius Break - Illectro Phunk’s Back

Last updated: 2nd Dec 2008

Music Genres: breaks, breakbeat, nu-skool, tech-funk

Description:
Sirius Break turns the funk up all the way up with his latest effort - ‘Illectro Phunk’s Back’. Get ready for some big, bad bass, boys and girls because this set is made up of some massive, memorable nu-skool and tech-funk floor fillers that will either pin you to the wall or make you expel all sorts of bodily fluids.

You can always expect something remarkable when Dylan Rhymes takes on Elite Force; and when when our mixologist throws in tunes from the likes of DJ Fixx, Deadmau5, Burufunk, Melleefresh and two huge acts from ‘Against The Grain‘ - Krafty and the Freestylers, you know you have yourself one hell of a party! Oh, look out for one truly wicked remix of a certain set of disco balls.

[FKL] Dj Spyhunter - Lectropop

Last updated: 2nd Dec 2008

Music Genres: breakbeat, electro, indie

Description:
DJ Spyhunter sounds like a character out of something Ian Fleming would’ve written, and though a UK native, the only thing this cat has a license to kill is the dancefloor massive! I first encountered a Spyhunter mixtape, as in tape cassette…, back in the mid 1990’s and even then he was pioneering the blend of styles such as trance, progressive and funky breaks, that is his signature today. At the time he was breaking in the Hawaii club scene and has since relocated to San Francisco where his modern day incarnation has incorporated more of the electro house movement.

I ran across quite a tasty set of his recently called “lectropo” that is a must download! With cuts from the likes of Black Daniel, Alex Metric, Digitalism, Sneaky Sound System, Teki Latex, and Daft Punk, “lectropop” is guarunteed to make you want to pop and lock. In Spyhunter’s own words :”strobing white vocals, blinding neon filters, held together with pixelated hooks. this is the party that goes on in the alley between the breaks club and the indie pop dive. just watch out for the cops! ”

[FKL] thesuperglo - Hippy Smurf Party

Last updated: 1st Nov 2008

Music Genres: psytrance, goa, darkpsy, full on,

Description:
Shrink thesuperglo down, introduce him to the Smurfs and this is what happens. He turns them all into psy-heads!

Although we are unlikely to see a 3 inch version of the boy running around any time soon, our shaman is all prepared for it, just in case. Bringing out some hypnotic psychedelic wizardry with yet another brilliant mixset, thesuperglo rips his way through with tunes from Electrypnose, Psymmetrix, Rastaliens and whole lot more; all stitched together with impeccable precision.

I can totally see Smurfette grooving to this. Gargamel, eat your heart out!

[FKL] Aura Kamikura - Live Microset @ Moritzbastei

Last updated: 30th Oct 2008

Music Genres: Breakcore, Dark DnB, Industrial

Description:
The Foundation presents:

Aura Kamikura - break it hard like a mayflower

Music in Leipzig, Germany may conjure up thoughts of classical composers like Richard Wagner and Johann Sebastian Bach to those steeped in tradition, but what many may not know is that Leipzig has a burgeoning scene of electronic pioneers and innovators with a penchant for blistering analogue bass belches, decimated high hats, and industrial snare hits. Aura Kamikura, aka Janina Otto, and the Global Noise Movement, are amongst those leading the way.

Aura has graced us with a micro-set from a Live session at Moritzbastei featuring tracks from Reformed Faction, Sonic Subjunkies, Mlada Fronta, Celluloid Mata, DJ Hidden, Ammo, Overcast, and 13th Hour. The set is organic yet logical and leads you though a journey of industrial, haunting, and sometimes, frightening intensity.

I think the DJ and producer, explains her take on music best in her own words:
I find it admirable that this scene is so wide: from techno to trance, from breakbeats to industrial and rhythmic noise. So I never can make a strict decision what to play. My sets differ from hard breaks, dark d`nb to industec, electro and rhythmic noise and also idm. Despite of this I would name everything which is produced with nous and sense as “intelligent dance music.”

[FKL] KaL - Bass On Ur Face

Last updated: 24th Oct 2008

Music Genres: dubstep

Description:
We have another new face here on the Foundation. KaL hops on the bandwagon with his take on the dubstep genre, presenting us some ‘Bass On Ur Face’.

Here’s a little shout out from the boy.

“Hey guys, I’m KaL from Malaysia, currently in New Zealand. This mixset consists of a bunch of heavy weight dubstep tunes from big dub-steppahs like Cotti, ClueKid, Tes La Rok and as well as Skream. Honestly I dont know how big is the dubstep scene back home but I would like to spread the Dubstep love to all the souljahs out there!” - KaL

There are some wicked tunes on this, including one of my all time favourites. Also, look out for a curious rework of Carl Orff’s O’ Fortuna!

[FKL] Rhys Byron - Audio Response 21

Last updated: 17th Oct 2008

Music Genres: breakbeat, electro, electro, funk, house, indie, soul

Description:
Audio Response 21 sees Rhys Byron churning out an eclectic blend of electro, funk and soul, moulded into one cohesive unit of pure aural gratification. “As a general rule anything by Fred Falke or Breakbot will get a rinsing over here and neither of them disappoint this week with their latest offerings. But my favorite tune this week is ‘Safari’ by La Mode for the funnest, funkiest, dirtiest break i’ve heard this year. I cannot wait to play this one out…” - Rhys Byron Rhys, who shares the weekly Audio Response show with our boy D’Arcy, can be heard every Sunday night at 10PM on Bay FM 99.9 for those in North NSW and online via the Audio Response weblog. Look out for some wonderful cuts from Kid Sister, 80Kidz, Broke One and Shinichi Osawa with this one and stay tuned as we bring you more Audio Response sets in the future.

[FKL] Vidda Vein - Made In Theta

Last updated: 10th Oct 2008

Music Genres: electro, breakbeat, tech-funk, indie

Description:
Theta Rhythms: One of several characteristic electroencephalogram (EEG) waveforms associated with various sleep and wakefulness states of the brain, between 4 and 8 Hz and involve many neurons firing synchronously in the hippocampus and through the cortex. These rhythms are associated with spatial navigation and some forms of memory and learning, especially in the temporal lobes.

First of all “Made In Theta” is not going to make you sleep. Not by a long shot. In fact, it sucks at making anyone sleep.

Why? Because it’s Vidda Vein returning to The Foundation with this astounding amalgamation of deep-electro-tech-funk awesomeness that takes the listener from floor-filling mosh mayhem to vivid dream-like introspection and hypnotism. And then blowing the roof and most of your clothes / brains off.

How the hell could you sleep through all that?

“Made In Theta” shows why this boy is one exciting talent booming out of Florida. This energy-ball of a mixset features some deep cuts as well mainroom ballsy-ness from the likes of Dada Life, Frederic De Carvalho & Tristy Nesh, Streetlife DJs, Giacomotto, Popof and Kid Blue.

Damn.

[FKL] Aiman - Flying High Again

Last updated: 9th Oct 2008

Music Genres: dnb, drum n bass

Description:
Aiman has brought the wickedness this month with a blistering bundle of bass-riddled, drum-slap happy riddims to get your soul jumping. Our UK based Graduate represents one of the styles that has distinguished Brit producers world-wide and masterfully blends liquid, tech step and neurofunk into a adrenalin-pumping roller-coaster set. Besides some of the biggest names in Drum & Bass today, i.e. High Contrast, Nu:Tone, and Danny Bird, Aiman brings in some lesser known talent such as Chase And Status, Mutt, and Taxman.

The beats are bumpin, so download and blaze this one… BOOM

[FKL] Sirius Break - The Dark Side of The Funk

Last updated: 9th Oct 2008

Music Genres: breakbeat, breaks

Description:
Sirius is baaaaaaaaaaack with a delectable dabble into the dark side of breaks…
If you like your music funky, grindy, gritty, grimey with some crunkin-crankin electro bass
then Sirius has got the junk to move your trunk this weekend.

Our Foundation brother has us bound for a memorable boogie night that features the work of B-Phreak and DJ Fixx, as well as some cameos by some of the cream of the A-list Breaks producers including Freestylers, Autobots, Drumattic Twins, Plump DJs, and Deekline & Wizard. This set could easily be titled “Best Breaks of our Day.” On the personal, Sirius I particularly applaud your dropping in that Future Funk Squad track… They are a great group and don’t get enough attention in my humble opinion… Oh yeah… hehehe, “Here in my Car…” Whaaaaat?!

[FKL] Jody Newman - Mix April 08

Last updated: 9th Oct 2008

Music Genres: drum n bass, dnb

Description:
Jody Newman serves up some DnB for the weekend with this brilliant amalgamation; criss-crossing multiple terrains and uniting them in one viscous and seem-less assembly. Starting off with a very trippy dreamscape, our mixologist proceeds to flow and rip his way through, dropping massive floor fillers midway, before tapering off into Valhalla.

While the set isn’t exactly new, it’s an impeccable blend of tunes that are close to the boy’s heart. With names like Juju, Skynet, Zero Tolerance and Calibre amongst the tracklist, this is a showcase of some mad skills from this DnB ninja.

[FKL] EJ - Thumbsukka

Last updated: 9th Oct 2008

Music Genres: minimal, techno

Description:
Good god! I have no idea how I am to express this blisteringly brilliant mix in words. Ever heard the saying ‘Less Is More‘? Well if there’s a mixset that embodies that phrase, EJ’s latest minimal-tech offering would probably be it!

A clean cut, well polished, spirit elevating, bone rattling effort featuring some of my personal faves, like Nathan Fake, Mark Knight, Funkagenda, Format B and *gasp* Alex Under!!

Thumbsukka does anything but suck.

It’s almost surreal how our mistress seems to bind each track with intelligent threads of cohesiveness that flings the listener out into the cosmos before driving them back to earth with basslines the size of houses. I guarantee this will bring out the screaming little groupie in you!

All I can say is, “Do You Remember Your First Time?”

[FKL] Dj Cornelius - From Rio To Toa Payoh: An Adventure In Baile Funk

Last updated: 9th Oct 2008

Music Genres: baile funk

Description:
We have a new face here on FKL this week. One that serves up something quite different from what we’re used to. Bringing in some fancy Rio stylized beats and bass is Dj C0rnelius from Singapore, with this awesomely crafted Baile-Funk mix. Here’s a short bio of the dude:

“DJ C0rnelius is the musical alter-ego of Irwan Abu Bakar, a full-time graphic designer and corporate whore by day. Exposed to a well diverse array of musical genres since young due to the varied musical choices of his elder brothers, his musical tastes were futher refined and expanded when he worked for UK music retailer giants, HMV as a customer service staff & buyer.

A trip to the now defunct Insomnia Club and watching local drum & bass heroes, Kiat & Ashidiq prompted him to get his hands dirty on DJ-ing. Counting influences from Radiohead to Smashing Pumpkins to Jurassic 5 to The Roots, he is at ease with whatever type of music there is, whether it is hip-hop or old-skool funk to drum & bass to Brazilian baile funk. His DJ heroes includes DJ Shadow, DJ Yoda, Diplo, Dieselboy, DJ Marky, James Zabiela and Norman Jay. DJ C0rnelius has graced the decks at Home Club (SG) and BaaBarBlackChic (SG).”

From Rio To Toa Payoh is furiously smooth and impeccably tight. Featuring tunes from the likes of DJ Sandrinho, DJ Edgar, MC Vanessinha and even a superb Diplo rework of M.I.A’s ‘Galang’. This will bring out the Samba demon in you!! Booties will shake!!

[FKL] Dj Moet - Sundrops Sessions 16: Hot Summer Fever 2

Last updated: 9th Oct 2008

Music Genres: electro, house

Description:
Fellow comrade-in-arms, Pascal Dupuy a.k.a Dj Möet, keeps the summer embers burning with the latest installation of his Sundrops series - Hot Summer Fever 2.

It’s deep. It’s soulful. It’s funky. And it oozes sex. Big Boy presents us with an orgiastic endeavour that progresses from ‘hot and sticky’ to a full on ‘Bakcheia‘. Scintillating. Not to mention titillating.

Featuring tracks from the likes of Echofalls, Joi Caldwell, Punx and, my favourite - Monkey Island vs. Chus and Ceballos, it is advisable to have a few buckets of ice ready for this one. Coz your drinks aren’t the only things that are gonna need them.

[FKL] No.4 - Buried Beneath the Plastic Sheen

Last updated: 9th Oct 2008

Music Genres: industrial, EBM

Description:
When my fellow FKL editor Raj, aka No. 4, aka Static Itch decides to do a mix, I never know what to expect, but I always know that it will challenge my sense of musical programming, and inspire with the coscienceness of his track selection. “Buried Beneath the Plastic Sheen” plays like a mixtape and has the feel of a soundtrack… And in the same way, it will imbue whatever you’re doing while listening to it with that sense of surreal intensity that only a great soundtrack can.

It starts off meditative with Jim Johnston’s interpretation of The Undertaker, winds through the mind with Massive Attack and Bong Ra, and suddenly you realize it’s too late as the aural trip nectar drives through your senses with Marco Beltrami vs. Marilyn Manson! The pathway of the programming is cutting and hypnotic, all at once sharp and sensual, as it goes from the blazing brain-bleeding bass of IDM to down-tempo groovin’.
Take a listen and enjoy the ride!

Hailing from the part of the United States that Bugs Bunny always made a wrong turn at on his way to the beach, Albuquerque, New Mexico, Chris Kaltenbach, aka Silence, certainly knows his way around a mix set. Since 1993, Silence has been known for keeping the dance floor packed with his eclectic rocking breakbeat record selection, his amazing ability to move the crowd with his fluid hypnotic mixing, and precise turntablism skills.

The transitions are indetecably smooth, with one track effortlessly giving way to the next, this is set is an energizing blend of electro, rock, progressive breaks, and even a bit of drum n bass… a true WTF mix!!

[FKL] DJ Define - Outta Here

Last updated: 9th Oct 2008

Music Genres: breakbeat, breaks

Description:
After months of chasing, pleading, crying and threatening, Dj Define finally returns to FKL! As one of KL’s well known breakbeat exponents, the boy lays out an impressive body of work this time around with ‘Outta Here’ .

Featuring some sweet, funky Nu-Skool tunage from the likes of Jaymo, Dj Icey, Stanton Warriors, Beat Assassins and good ol’ Krafty Kuts, Define takes us all on a journey with this progressively structured mixset, building slow, steady and almost minimalistic before pounding us all at the end with, what is probably, Lot 49’s most pivotal release of 2007 - Trevor Lovey’s rework of 30hz’s ‘Daddio’ .

Good to have you back Define. Can we please not wait another gazillion years for the next one?

[FKL] DJ Smoke - Birdsong

Last updated: 9th Oct 2008

Music Genres: breaks, dubstep, electro, house,

Description:
DJ Smoke hails from Deschutes County, in Central Oregon, better known as “Paradise” to it’s residents and frequent visitors, and represents a variety of the grooving, tribal sounds that Left-Coasters crave.

A veteran of the club scene, large-format outdoor music festivals, and everything in between, DJ Smoke knows how to work a crowd through an arc of funky, dirty, grimey beats and make your body rock to electro and bounce to disco. Featuring hot joints from Modeselector, Alex Celler, Armand Van Helden, BassNectar, Benny Benassy, Sander Kleinberg, The Discipline Grin, and my personal fave Ben Westbeech, this mixtape set is just a taste of the goods that Smoke has in his sack of tricks…
