New York kings of all things amazing The Walkmen play a special gig at Manchester's Central Methodist Hall (wait, where??) next week. Here are five reasons why you need to be there.

1) The band’s latest album, Lisbon, is being whispered about as their best yet. Big words, especially considering the majesty of some of their earlier offerings, but with its subtle yet anthemic twists and turns, it’s got the critics and the fans alike pretty excited. This will be a great opportunity to see the band performing songs from the new album, along with a selection of excellent songs from their back catalogue. And there are a lot to choose from.

2) The band play only on vintage instruments, to create a more unique and authentic sound. This sounds brilliant on their albums, but just wait until you hear them live. Wowee.  The band have created some self-imposed rules regarding their vintage instruments, which state that however valuable the instrument, it should be carried in a 'cheap, flimsy bag', and the band never use guitar stands, because 'an antique Fender looks much cooler propped against a speaker'.

3) They play LOUD. Really, really, fucking loud. “We play really loud” says organist Walter Martin. “I don't know why, we try to shake that, but as soon as we turn it down a little bit, we get bored so we play very, very loud.” This is a good thing.

4) They’re a very well turned out bunch. And we know that shouldn’t really be a reason, but it is. Well, it’s nice to make an effort, isn’t it.

5)The venue itself is reason enough to go to this gig. We bet you didn’t even know that the Central Methodist Hall existed, perched as it is above the shops on Manchester’s Oldham Street. A true hidden gem, inside it’s really something special; a 1950s concert hall with a galleried seating area upstairs and a large standing area.

Still not convinced? Have a listen for yourself. Here’s their biggest hit to date, ‘The Rat’:
