This Saturday sees Sankeys reeeewind several decades, as hip hop turntable legend Grandmaster Flash brings his craft to the Wheels of Steel.
As one of the true pioneers of the art of decks, Flash was the first to really take the craft beyond the streets and establish it firmly as an art form. He built the first DJ mixer, identified a little known turntable as the most reliable for what he intended to do with records (The legendary technics 1210) and set about transforming records into collages of sound.
Every artist, club, raver or person with even a passing interest in dance music culture owes him everything. Flash was the first to debut track DJing skills like mixing records behind his back or beneath table, kicking mixing faders with his feet. Flash's 1981 single "The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on The Wheels of Steel" was the first record to exemplify Hip-Hop DJing skills, and with his group The Furious Five’s 1982 hit "The Message" was one of the first serious rap records. By 1981 the landmark "Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel" was released. This single gave people the first recorded example of Flash's wizardry on the turntables, and it was the first record of its kind.
Whether you're a hip-hop head or not, a Grandmaster Flash show is simply an unmissable display of turntable wizardry - and this event is going to be special!
Support for the Flash man comes in the shape of Wimbledon funkateers Gold Teeth, with Sankeys allowing some local love in the shape of the Manchester Hip-Hop Society.
Kaluki will be hot-footing over to Spektrum to ensure that the boom bass of hip-hop doesn’t completely replace the brilliant house that usually dominates Saturday nights at Sankeys.
