Wax:on Live - 31/05 Leeds - win Tickets
21st Apr 2008
Complete
with six staggeringly explosive arenas each showcasing a different dance
aesthetic to devastating effect. The first entrance from Geordie raves
organiser extraordinaire Wax:On into the festival market packs no punches,
coming through like a juggernaut into a saturated market which needs a breath
of fresh air. Quite how the Hall, city or indeed club land itself will ever be
the same remains to be seen.
It’s
simply frightening...
Wax:On
themselves take over the first arena, and do so by hauling Glaswegian rockers
Primal Scream down for the ride. The band have simply become one of the UK’s
finest since their creation at the end of the eighties, enlisting former Stone
Roses axeman Mani for the ride and creating music history with their Andrew
Weatherall produced masterpiece ‘Screamadelica’ in 1995. Now operating knee
deep in art house blues and post garage melancholy, they are quite simply
stunning. They are joined by further live shows from disco upstarts Hercules
and the Love Affair and Late of the Pier, with DJ support from Green Velvet,
Erol Alkan, Annie Mac and Riotous Rockers, plus Wax:On stalwarts People Get Real, TC Monckton and Oli Patten. Now for the rest...
Wall of Sound take over the second
arena, bringing their own take on the music industry through their unadulterated
take on the acid house manifesto. Like Primal Scream, their ingenuity is built
upon blending the punch and visceral glory of live rock with the sheer pleasure
of abandoning yourself in the repetitive groove of dance music, and illustrate
this with a selection of bands and DJs. Chart toppers and stadium slaying
rockers Reverend of the Makers appear at the pinnacle of the bill, duly
supported on a live basis by the Infadels, The Shortwave Set, Shychild, Ocelot
and Ahuman. DJ wise, X-Press 2 throw up an exclusive acid house set, the
Unabombers fire out their dynamic eclectic techno soul and label owners Alvin C
and Mark Jones kick things off. Oh yeah, and just in case you weren’t assured
of the benefits of marrying the two genres, the original master Andrew
Weatherall is here to show you how it’s done.
Elsewhere Technique get an arena, bringing (deep breath!)
Steve Lawler, Derrick May, Stacey Pullen, Steve Bug and Ivan
Smagghe amongst a few others offering a beguiling blend of dark
house and spellbinding techno to pummel the ear drums and obliterate the feet.
Hospitality, the promotional front of long running soulful drum n bass imprint
Hospital Records, bring together Shy FX, Ed Rush, London Elektricity and DJ Die
for a kaleidoscopic deebee torpedo, not to mention dubstep from Skream and
Plastician.
The fifth arena sees some seismic experiments in the
avant-garde of electronic deepness with Manchester upstarts Naive Melody hosting
a blistering selection of dance floor electronica with Matthew Herbert, Justus
Kohncke Live, I-F, Ame and Dixon amongst the names fighting it out
for supremacy. And then finally Adventures in the Beetroot field lay their
cards o the table with a swaggering selection of the erratic elements of the
underground. The Count of Monte Cristo and Sinden Live, Friendly Fires,
Operator Please, Christopher D Ashley and the Autokratz are the highlights
of a monstrous offering.
This is a huge step up for Wax:On and
indicative of how far the club has evolved, and bringing together some like-minded
sessions from around the UK makes for a simply staggering party dripping with
talent the whole way through.
Don’t miss this…
