Biography

Maria Uzor is in search of transcendence. And if it comes with a hook and a fat dirty bass line, all the better.

The artist, producer, and previously one half of acclaimed post-punk dance duo SINK YA TEETH, began working on solo material after Covid put a stop to the promotion of the 2nd Sink Ya Teeth album.

A calling to reconnect with herself and others, a desire to learn new production techniques, and a penchant for fusing different genres has resulted in a catalogue of creeping, twisting sounds. Mixing footwork, dub, rave, avant-pop and early techno, Maria builds an expansive, groove-laden world of dark heavy bass and pulsing lights with an experimental slant. But while the aim may be to experience something beyond, the vibe is very much basement club, rooted in the human experience and the pleasures of dancing.

Maria self-released her first EP ‘Hard Ears’ in September 2020; a collection of four songs that had been sitting on her hard drive for a couple of years and that were never quite suitable for Sink Ya Teeth. A remix EP followed with mixes from A Certain Ratio and The Secret DJ.

Her 2nd EP, ‘Innocence and Worldliness’ was released in September 2021, once again on her own label Hey Buffalo records. Four dance tracks with themes of expansion and growth following adversity.

Maria’s upcoming release, ‘Songs For Luminous Living’ marks the third in a trilogy of EPs written and released in the two years since Covid. She has gained support and radio play from JAMZ SUPERNOVA, AMY LAME and JOHN KENNEDY amongst others.

In the past year, Maria has opened for BLACK MIDI, LONE LADY and BABA ALI, and performed at The Great Escape and Shambala festival.

Recent collaborations have included ACID KLAUS (Adrian Flanagan / Moonlandingz / Eccentronic Research Council) !!! (CHK CHK CHK), A Certain Ratio and Chris Leibing.
