Acacia was born in Ootacamund (India) and moved to the United Kingdom at the age of 3. She is influenced by both the cultures that she has been exposed to in her life and depicts this in her music, through cultural influence.
Acacia is known for songs such as 'Ghost' and 'Gravity' gaining BBC Introducing Artist of the Week with Yasser (BBC Asian Network) and playlisted on the BBC Asian Network Charts. She has gained reviews from Mim Shaikh, DJ Nish on her unique voice and from Yasser as the 'answer to our prayers'. Acacia has also been invited and spoken at the BBC 100 Women 2016 event in London on the importance of equality and diversity within music and society as a whole. She aims to represent women of colour within the mainstream, bringing her modern Alternative Rnb sound as well as classical Indian fusion to the crux of the mainstream sound.
Her western vocal training has been the heart of her sound, which depicts an urban soulful and rich tone. Initially training under Classical Western and Operatic styles, she then pursued her own route to find her sound with a RnB soul style.
Acacia seeks her inspiration for her name from her roots, going back to her ancestral home in India named 'Acacia Cottage'. The word has come to mean strong character and fierce determination in the family. Much like the thorn tree, Acacia is deadly and dynamic. She branches out into a new sphere of music, maintaining her Indian customs and traditions and bringing them into the new age.
Her formal training in Classical Indian Dance (Bharatanatyam) began at the age of 4 under Mark Hatton (Mritika Arts Dance School) and continued under Anusha Subramanyam (Beeja) as part of the nationally acclaimed Centre for Advanced Training DanceXchange programme at the Birmingham Hippodrome for Bharatanatyam and Contemporary Dance (including classical and modern fusion of music and dance). As part of Dance India UK, she has also been coached by Srimathi Pushkala Gopal, Srimathi Priyadarshani Govind (Director of Kalakshetra), Leela Samson and Shri Shijith Nambiar. Born into a family of Indian Carnatic singers she was inspired by her late grandmother, Revathi Balachandran (Bharatanatyam dancer and Carnatic singer) to pursue both music and dance.
Acacia brings back tradition to the crux of mainstream music. Her incorporation of her classical Indian roots and ethereal dark tones formulates a new age urban explosion
