Opening the main stage at Creamfields and playing Space Ibiza, it is safe to say 2011 has seen some defining moments in Alan Hartley’s 16-year DJ career.
Always thinking of himself as a clubber first and jock second, Alan was bitten by the house music bug back in 1986 but it was not until 1995, at the not so tender age of 28, that he took up DJing. Since then he has more than made up for lost time spinning his way around the country, securing gigs at many of the UK’s biggest house nights.
Starting out with a residency at Liverpool’s now infamous G Bar, back when it was still in its infancy in 96, the Manchester Mardi Gras, Love Junky, Venus, Vain Glorious and Garlands were among his early years gigs. Few can have escaped his dazzling sets when resident for cool-Cheshire party organisers Ultima and Peruvia and he has entertained the beautiful people at Miss Moneypenny’s and Chuff Chuff.
Versatile and skilled at steering the dancefloor, he believes clubbers’ inspiration and satisfaction should come before musical education. He is equally happy playing the anthems and classics as he is playing big room driving house and his closing sets have become the stuff of legend among fans.
In 2002 Alan turned his hand to promoting, co-founding Twisted Elegance at Manchester’s Ampersand Nightclub. With its glam house soundtrack, lavish productions and teams of entertainers it quickly became one of the country’s most divine dancefloors, a magnet for footballers, soapstars and the stylish party people of the northwest and in 2007 Pete Tong declared Twisted Elegance the new kings of glam.
That same year he took the brand out to Ibiza teaming up with Kiss da Funk for a one-off spectacular at the island’s famous El Divino and playing back to back with Rob Tissera.
But, after five years at the top with Twisted, Alan decided the time was right to go back to his roots and at the end of 2007 he gave give up the glitter cannons and packed in promoting to focus on DJing.
It was a wise move as the bookings flooded in from clubs across the north and Miss Moneypenny’s added him to their rosta of tour DJs.
2009 was a very busy year for Alan across the UK with bookings for the likes of Moneypenny’s, Twisted Elegance and at some amazing parties including the Hedkandi and Space Tours in Liverpool.
He rounded the year out in style playing alongside Boy George and Judge Jules at The Perfect Night’s NYE Extravaganza at Chester Racecourse. He returned to Chester five months later to close for his own DJ hero Roger Sanchez, exceeding his own expectations.
A second dream was achieved this summer when he took to the hallowed turntables of Space to play for Pukka Up.
In 2008 Alan was welcomed into the Creamfields fold for the first time when he landed the closing gig in the VIP hospitality arena at Creamfields' 10th anniversary.
Leaving the crowd panting for more at four in the morning on a soaking wet bank holiday Saturday, he ensured himself return bookings for 2009 and 2010…and the biggest gig of his life 2011.
Taking to the stage at midday on the Sunday his driving house sound enticed bleary-eyed festival-goers from their tents and filled the field with close to 5,000 clubbers.
His set was the talk of facebook the next day and won Alan a whole new set of fans.
