Alexander lives in the Scottish Highlands. Composing at home, which sits amongst forested hills and beside a rushing river, he gains inspiration from the natural world around him. The result is unbounded and original, conscious and from the heart.
On the 8th April 2016 the 28-year-old composer released his much awaited second collection for solo piano, ‘Portraits of Earth’, recorded and produced by award-winning classical engineer Philip Hobbs. It was recorded at Crear house on the rugged West Coast of Scotland; a stunning converted byre that sits above the Atlantic Ocean. The album, featuring new piano works that have been five years in the making, was recorded in a single take on the final morning of the sessions.
His music has been described as “not jazz, not classical, not improvised, but a glimpse of something new...” and his second album only deepens this enigma.
Alexander's debut album for solo piano, ‘Sketches of Light’, has appeared across radio and TV, featured on several chart-topping compilation albums and continues to enchant listeners around the world.
Alexander declined a place to study music at university, instead choosing to explore the music that was coming naturally to him. He comes from an artistic family and created all of the artwork for his debut album. The striking image used for ‘Portraits of Earth’ shows the Jura mountains or ‘Paps’ as they are known locally. These were visible from the recording location and have been beautifully captured in paint and ink by his brother Edward.
