Over the past 2 years Yorkshire bred beat-maker AlgernonCornelius has been prolific in producing “emotionally-infused”, “drugged-out and unsettling” beat-tapes, garnering comparisons as flattering and diverse as DJ Shadow, Oneohtrix Point Never, Dälek, Radiohead and The Chemical Brothers.
Debut single ‘Blind’ (2015) was a stuttering soul track, re-working a classic Minnie Riperton sample to create something beautifully unique and tentative. It served as a perfect introduction and was shortly followed by the ‘Happiness’ mixtape (2015) - released as a A/B-side on bandcamp.
In April 2016 he dropped the ‘Sarni Deli’ EP, which saw the traditional soul of ‘Happiness’ replaced with dissonant loops, distorted breakbeats and booming sub-bass. The ‘Sarni Deli’ EP is the first of a sci-fi trilogy, set to be followed up by its sequels (‘Botanical’ and ‘Love/Relic’) later this year, along with live dates - having already supported the likes of Jennifer Herrema (Royal Trux), Lady Leshurr, Algiers and Blood Sport.
AlgernonCornelius’s musical philosophy is rooted in the art of the DJ, and thus an infinitely eclectic and boundless approach to sampling has produced some of the most disorientating music you’re likely to hear this year. Prepare to be recontextualised.
