Biography

Riding high on the wave of brass band-influenced jazz, Bristol-based Dakhla Brass are back with a new album – Murmur – on Impossible Ark Records. With their first new release since BBC Introducing & Jamie Cullum presented them at Montreal Jazz Festival in 2016 and at the Jamie Cullum BBC Prom, the unusual line up of four brass players + drummer is augmented with Nostalgia 77 double bassist Riaan Vosloo. Dakhla Brass weave glittering brass threads into intricate musical tapestries like no other band. Propelled by restless percussion, theirs is ‘not exactly’ music – not exactly jazz, not exactly brass band or Arabian or Second Line Mardi Gras. . yet it draws on all that and more.Expect a lattice of intricate brass lines over simmering drums, flurries of improvisation and carefully-crafted through-arrangements.

This is demon stuff, delivered with deadly accuracy by six exceptional musicians, and it’s in a class of it’s own.

“Murmur has up’d their game; what was already a great band has up’d it even further!” (Jamie Cullum, BBC Radio 2)

‘Murmur is a masterpiece of infinite subtlety’ (Raul da Gama)
