David Youngs is a multi-instrumentalist based in Cambridge, UK. In recent years he has focused intensely on the acoustic guitar, developing a percussive, finger-style approach to produce instrumental works often featuring unusual yet accessible time signatures and scales.
His debut album 'Transience' received excellent reviews in the music press, with Guitarist Magazine describing it as
"A clear and unambiguous announcement - the arrival of a talented addition to the ranks of elite acoustic stylists, who've followed in the footsteps of the late, much lamented Eric Roche."
Acoustic Magazine also noted that "Right from the opening cut ‘71210388’, it’s clear that this debut instrumental album from Cambridge-based acoustic guitarist, David Youngs, is rather special. Carefully controlled, Youngs’ work has a delightful deftness – reminiscent of Eric Roche and Michael Hedges – and with bags of brooding power lurking beneath. It’s a shining example of acoustic guitar instrumental playing at its finest. Highly recommended."
In 2011, David was also fortunate enough to attend a study workshop with Preston Reed ("widely thought of as the world's most gifted guitarist" - Total Guitar) and he continues to develop a unique style to further what has been an entertaining and personal musical journey to date.
Maverick Magazine commented specifically on this style, remarking that ‘David’s particular type of picking has certainly reaped dividends because his playing ability is akin to Derrin Nauendorf - if David’s gigs are anything like the aforementioned New Zealand artist, they will be remarkable. Although this is his debut album, David performs as though he has been proudly releasing records in a steady stream”
Having already appeared alongside notable acoustic artists such as Clive Carroll, Emily Barker and Miranda Sykes/Rex Preston, and with other great reviews by the likes of R2 Magazine and praise from his contemporaries (Chris Woods: “An exceptional CD, I’m a fan!”), iyou’re going to be hearing a lot more about David Youngs in the not too distant future.
He is currently recording his next CD in the studio.
