Sonic explorer, experimentalist and wrongwriter, Ergo Phizmiz's music jumps freely between pop, pranksterism, mutant-electro and just about everything in-between. Described by The Wire magazine as a "one man movement", and by BBC Radio 3 as "one of the most inventive composers around...a musical equivalent to Chris Morris", Ergo has developed a reputation as one of the most genuinely innovative composers working today.
A singularly prolific artist, he has created over 300 hours of audio and video, including projects for the Tate Modern, the Royal Festival Hall, the Dutch Academy of Fine Art, Cologne Kulturbunker, Arts Council England, Geneva School of Art, Cherbourg-Octeville College of Music & Atagatomusi-k, Resonance FM, Ubuweb, WFMU, Sonic Arts Network, and BBC Radio 3. This work spans live performance, installation, radio-art, video-art, residencies, and interactive music, sometimes working alone and sometimes in collaboration, with artists including People Like Us, Safety Scissors, Irene Moon, Martha Moopette, Blank Beats, Scanner, The The, Luke Fowler, Xper Xr, Alex Nielsen and Man From Uranus. He has released music with labels including Sonore, Mukow, Sonic Arts Network, ~Scape, Soleilmoon, The Wire, LMC, Egotwister and Match My Foot. Current and future projects include releases on Womb Records & Slag Records, a new radio-series and installation '1000 Year Mix', and a new album 'Perpetuum Mobile' in collaboration with People Like Us on Soleilmoon. He has also recently created "Wholepole - The Discotheque of Erotic Misery", becoming the first electronic music artist to ever be commissioned for a full length work by BBC Radio 3. From October 2006 to June 2007 Ergo will mix and present a weekly radio-show The Phuj Phactory on New York freeform radio station WFMU.
The music of Ergo Phizmiz takes human culture, mashing and manipulating it into new shapes and forms. It has references to hip-hop, world, lo-fi, ambient, plunderphonics, traditional dance music, Eastern-European, Gamelan, and cartoon music, though never settling in any one area and always jumping and mixing between genres until genre isn't an issue anymore. Mr Phiz lives in Ventnor on the Isle of Wight, with two lovely ladies, one of whom is 5" 2' and the other who is not yet two.
