Playing guitar and custom-built cajon, Gingers one-man-show, includes original songs and deconstructed covers of popular hits from across half a dozen decades.
A Staffordshire based singing song writer, with an eclectic mix of influences, Ginger draws inspiration from the widely influential work of the likes of Robert Johnson to the less commonly referenced works born out of bands like Fairground Attraction, Counting Crows and the Beautiful South. A key influence in Ginger’s own drive to perform however is Richie Havens – a man who felt the urge to perform and the ingenuity not to let the task of formally learning to play the guitar stand in his way.
In addition to performing as a solo artist, Ginger also performs as part of a fantastic drum and guitar recording duo ‘Bash and Strum’. He also busks with bassist ‘Fat Fingered Freddie’ performing as ‘Strum and Bass’.
Ginger writes predominantly story-based songs woven into rhythmic tales. In 2014 Bash and Strum released their debut live studio album ‘Rendezvous’ including 8 tracks penned by Ginger. From the resilience of ‘Take what you want’ and ‘Get out of here’, optimism of ‘This heart of mine’, ‘Rendezvous’ and ‘First sight’; despair, lust and regret of ‘Wake-up’, ‘Wanna love you’ and ‘Gone’ the tracks are a journey through the highs and lows of personal relationships on and off line.
Born the son of a dustman and seamstress, and raised on a council estate in West London.
A self-taught musician, Gingers describes his earliest memory of playing:
“My uncle Phil left a load of musical gear at our flat in the mid 70’s and I had explicit instructions not to touch his stuff. However early Sunday mornings I discovered a ‘how to play guitar’ programme, so while my folks were asleep, I’d take a guitar, sit in front of our black and white telly and try and learn to play. I never got caught and I did learn the one finger ‘G’ and ‘C’ chord position. It’s just a pity I didn’t learn anything about actually tuning a guitar.â€
At the age of ten Geoffrey and his family moved to Cornwall returning to London in the early 80’s where Ginger went on to study at art-college which also resulted in his move to Staffordshire.
Profits from all Gingers performances are donated to GIST Cancer Support UK. GIST is a very rare form of incurable cancer, which crashed into Gingers life new years eve 2015. Preliminary diagnosed with a GIST tumour, after months of tests and a 5 hours of surgery, Ginger was given the all clear. Along the way Ginger met a host of wonderful individuals and families facing the disease, which on paper sets out a life expectancy of no more than 5 years.
“It is strange, for 7 months I was a member of a club no one wanted to be a member of, but those in the club did the best they could to make every new member welcome, and supported. Having been told I was terminally ill, then finding out the diagnosis was wrong was beyond words. While I was thankful for the reprieve I couldn’t just walk away from the club. I have always donated some of my profits from performing to charity, and so it was a no brainer to now make that charity GIST Cancer Support UK.â€
