Biography

Gordon Mac (Known as the Godfather of dance music) is a highly innovative and successful entrepreneur. He carved out his career as the first person to start a pirate radio station and become legalised in the UK, the youngest ever Managing Director of a radio station and renound for creating the Kiss FM brand.

Having begun his career as a DJ in his early teens, Gordon cut his teeth as a DJ on pirate radio station JFM across London, until he set up his first pirate radio station, Kiss FM, in 1985.

Kiss FM was set up as a pirate station specifically to reflect the new dance culture among young people. Gordon successfully launched Kiss FM in September 1990 as Britain’s first dance music station, quickly establishing the station as an essential part of London’s music scene.

From November 1985 to November 1997 he was not only Managing Director of the station but also masterminded the establishment of the Kiss network, franchising Kiss 102 in Manchester and Kiss 105 in Yorkshire. Kiss FM London set itself a target of 1million listeners a week, which was achieved by year two and made Kiss the most successful new radio station.

Gordon also devised Kiss TV. It broadcast for an hour nightly, for nearly two years on satellite and cable television. It consisted of 5 separate lifestyle shows and represented the lifestyles of the DJs and the listeners. With an ever growing number of viewers, it soon hit 2nd place behind MTV, which therefore expanded the Kiss brand to a national audience.

In November 1997, Gordon left Kiss FM, and EMAP, who by this time had taken complete control of all shares, and valueing the KIss company at £40m.

Gordon has been busy since leaving the world of radio but has never been too far away from his love - music. He’s hosted a weekly radio show on Choice Fm and draws in huge crowds at venues across the UK as a guest DJ.

November 2002 saw Gordon realize another of his dream’s, by setting up a venue and restaurant which served the best Caribbean food and boasted the top urban DJ line up. Coming from South London, Gordon wanted to bring something to Brixton, so invested in the Z Bar as the first West End style bar and restaurant in the area
