An unstoppable urge to entertain. That is the steadfast foundation for all performances of guitarist, Guy Smeets. Touching, exhilarating, lifting the audience and carrying them away on a shared thrilling musical experience. For Guy, that is the ultimate driving force behind everything he does as a musician.
Being rooted in blues since early childhood and inspired by the music by blues giants like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Guy has grown into an all-rounder with his own recognizable sound. Not only as the engaged, charismatic guitarist who lets sparks fly between him and his audience. Also as a composer, songwriter and producer, Guy convincingly creates his own sound.
It merely took him a few years as a kid and as a teenager to pave the road from his first toy guitar bought at a flea market, to his ‘Best Dutch Blues Musician’ award in 2019. The switch from small pub stages in his hometown, to major venues, such as AFAS Live and Ziggo Dome, and international tours through Europe came just as quickly.
However, where the blues initially seemed to become his musical career path, it now appears to have been the solid bedrock for his development into a musical centipede. For others, it might have been classical music that laid the foundation for their later career. For Guy this was the blues. Through it, he has been able to develop his own sound. Whatever music Guy plays, his blues roots as his personal characteristic, give a deep and righteous ‘soul’ to all his music.
A boisterous start has already brought Guy to the point of a musical dream, one that he already expressed as a child: to be an entertainer, who fascinates and inspires his audience through his music and performance. That vision of the future struck him like a bolt of lightning when he attended a Robbie Williams’ concert with his father at the age of six. Hypnotised by the frenzied atmosphere of the 60,000-strong audience, the solidarity and inspiring chemistry that fused Robbie Williams with his audience, small Guy proclaimed to his father: “That’s what I want when I grow up!”
That vision that Guy had as a child, after the lightning start he made on the stage of the blues, is increasingly taking shape. Performances with artists such as Phil Bee and AJ Plug, his musical collaboration with André Hazes Jr. and Ben Poole, and especially his recent joining of the party band Hard2Get, is opening the cage for the stage animal more and more, and the charismatic entertainer that is Guy Smeets.
