Biography

DJ, producer and promoter based in Edinburgh, Scotland.

CLUB PROMOTION & 'TROUBLE'

Hobbes started DJing in the mid-90s and promoted his first events in Grenoble ('95-96), where he met and/or came into contact with the great and the good from the nascent, local Grenoblois rave/techno scene (Miss Kittin, The Hacker, Kiko, Oxia et al).

Having run the award-winning Trouble events in Edinburgh (2002-2015), he’s toured internationally, via tiny sweat-boxes and after-hours affairs to bigger clubs and festivals – hot-spots from the Isle of Wight to Aberdeen, across Europe, to Shanghai, Beijing and Tokyo….

Under the banner of Trouble, he worked with countless names from across the soul/dance spectrum: Candi Staton, Marlena Shaw, Spanky Wilson, Horace Andy, Arrested Development, Ashely Beedle, Norman Jay MBE, Jazzie B OBE (Soul II Soul), Daddy G (Massive Attack), Dego (4hero), Fat Freddys Drop, The Black Seeds, Shapeshifter, Roy Ayers, The Headhunters, Mr Scruff, Greg Wilson, Gilles Peterson, Rainer Truby, Henrik Schwarz, The Unabombers, Mark Rae, Jazzanova, Crazy P, The Nextmen, Quantic, Alice Russell, Mim Suleiman, Horse Meat Disco, The Herbaliser, Aim, Ben Westbeech, Dixon, Ame, The Revenge, Bugz In The Attic, DJ Vadim, Kyoto Jazz Massive, Domu, Mark Pritchard, Neil Landstrumm, JD Twitch (Optimo), Kirk Degiorgio, Ian O’Brien, The Bays, Patife, Drumagick, Fernanda Porto, Craig Smith/6th Borough Project, Gareth Sommerville, Hudson Mohawke, LuckyMe, Eclair FiFi, Linkwood, Quarion, Auntie Flo, Fudge Fingas, Lone, Mount Kimbie, Creep, Redinho, Actress and Young Fathers, among others…

HOBBES MUSIC LABEL

2010-2012 saw the development of the Hobbes Music label, to release a unique remix series marking the tenth anniversary of Trouble, Leonidas & Hobbes productions and more.

Leonidas & Hobbes productions draw on a broad palette of influences: dub, disco, funk, soul, jazz, techno, house, prog, ambient, exotica, sci-fi and more....

In 2017, the 'Voynich / 'STCFTHOTA' 12" (HM007) was an underground hit in the house & techno scene for new artist DALI, while Leonidas & Hobbes's 'Rags Of Time' EP (HM008) was big on the Balearic scene and consequently voted Release Of The Year by DJs on Bill Brewster's 'DJ History' podcast.

The label has really come into its own since then, signing more new artists - Tokyo's Kota Motomura, Glasgow's Gaming, Yorkshire's Jacksonville, Edinburgh's Exterior, The Off Key Hat (featuring vocalist Michelle Manetti, from London), Osaka's Kiji Suedo, Moscow via Tallinn's Galun, Edinburgh's George T aka George Demure - and further diversifying in style, while remaining true to its core values.

Each release has gained plaudits from its respective scene's major players* - from ambient, dub and IDM to Balearic/house/disco, techno/electro and UKG/bass - lending further weight to a record label becoming more broadly recognised for espousing a consistent level of quality while not following any trends.

*Nina Kraviz, Levon Vincent, Laurent Garnier, Ben UFO, Avalon Emerson, Erol Alkan, DFA, Bawrut, Groove Armada, JD Twitch/Optimo, Daniel Avery, Horse Meat Disco, Rolando (UR), Bill Brewster, Kink, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Auntie Flo, Tim Sweeney/Beats In Space, Greg Wilson, Andrew Weatherall, nd Baumecker, Red Rack’Em, Justin Robertson, Kenneth Bager/Music For Dreams, Alfredo, Leo Mas, Nancy Noise, Crazy P, Cedric Woo, Resident Advisor, Les Yeux Orange, Ransom Note, Bondi Beach Radio, Mixmag, DJ Mag, Ibiza Sonica, Ibiza Voice, Electronic Sound, Tom Ravenscroft, Mary Anne Hobbs, Nemone, Gideon Coe, Rob Da Bank, Stuart Maconie and many, many more…
