Joe started to DJ at the age of 12, he would borrow jungle records off one of his older brothers, hip hop records off the other brother and Techno and house from his parents record collection... initially dj'ing in the daytime at free parties in the 90's in southern Portugal and then in his early teens at beach bars and music venues in the region.
Early 2000's he moved to the UK and started a hip hop night with a couple of mates at the famous Blue Note Club in Todmorden, the event was called 'The Hook Up' and would later travel to venues in Blackburn, Leeds, Huddersfield, Bradford & Hebden Bridge.
Some years later he joined 'Chapter 4' the already well established Reggae & Dub crew from Hebden Bridge who had been promoting 'Bassculture' since the mid nineties at the Trades Club in Hebden Bridge. In the 2010's Chapter 4 would start to bring some big reggae legends to the small town including Lee Perry, Johnny Osbourne, Macka B, Prince Fatty, Wrongtom and many more. Chapter 4 would also go on to promote the first ever guest (Don Letts) at the now famous Golden Lion in Todmorden.
In more recent years along with Kev Original & Nicky General he established Chum Chon Hifi (chum chon roughly translates to 'community' in Thai) - the ply wood sound system was the in house system at the Golden Lion for the first couple of years after Gig and Waka took on the pub (hence the thai name). Chum Chon have also brought many many guests to the Golden Lion especially in the early years, more recently Chum Chon have been promoting the 'Jazz 2 Jungle' event where dj's are invited to play outside of their comfort zone.
J-Black can flit between genres and play to any crowd which is no surprise really....
