A co-founder of Manchester's In The Loop crew (a club night which was integral to the explosion of Manc hip hop in recent years), Agent J aka Jamie Groovement (so named for his blog and podcast of the same name) has warmed up for Ghostface Killah, DJ Format, Lamb, KING, Renegade Brass Band and Nightmare On Wax, played 45 sets ahead of Marlena Shaw, The Excitements, Myron & E, The Souljazz Orchestra, Lee Fields and the MIghty Mocambos, plus opened up at the legendary Craig Charles Funk and Soul Club.
As part of the In The Loop trio, he's opened for El-P, Talib Kweli, Ultramagnetic MCs, Raekwon, RZA, Pharoahe Monch and been a routine part of the UK's only official J Dilla tribute night.
A regular selector on the Manchester bar scene, in a past life he organised and played at bar sessions for the Fat City family in the final years of the famous record shop. Since then he's continued to select of an evening for a variety of Manc bars including a current Groovement monthly shindig (3rd Fridays) at Kosmonaut.
He's a frequent touchstone for artists visiting Manchester, interviewing everyone from Angie Stone to Sharon Jones and Flying Lotus, Pete Rock and Danny Brown, and also writes for the one of the last bastions of print, Bonafide Magazine. He regularly selects new underground music for the Groovement podcast, and forms one quarter of the Battlestar Mancunia crew on Reform Radio.
He’s spoken about the Manchester scene on panels at Tramlines and Unconvention plus hosted events for Mixcloud and Eventbrite. In 2015 he hosted a Red Bull Music Academy workshop in Manchester with DJ Premier and Royce Da 5’9’’ about the making of the PRhyme album.
