Biography

Joanna’s songs are a contemporary take on the timeless stories of life, love and loss delivered with a soaring soprano, which is both gutsy and fragile, riding on delicious melodies and understated arrangements. The effect is so hypnotic – drawing you in close and leaving you wanting more.

The feedback… ‘after it’s over it’s like someone just turned the colour down on the day’ – Tony Scott, GuilFest

‘… and in case I haven’t mentioned it before, I just loooove ‘Don’t Stop’! It’s never far away from my MP3 player! – David Durant, Surrey Unsigned, Brooklands FM

Joanna Weston is an award winning singer-songwriter from Guildford in Surrey, who’s had overseas airplay by channels like HGRNJ.org in New Jersey, and by many UK based radio stations including BBC Surrey, Eagle Radio, EKR.com and Brooklands FM where she was the featured artist with two hours of live play and chat on David Durant’s Unsigned Show. Her music was also handpicked for the ‘BBC Introducing: The South’ show, hosted by Phil Jackson, where a panel of music industry professionals critique three unsigned artist from similar genre live on air.

The feedback… ‘Brilliant’. ‘Joanna’s voice is really smooth, passionate and honest sounding, it really makes you believe her performance’. ‘She sounds similar to Martha Tilsden’. ‘Reminds me of a sanded down Joni Mitchell’.

This year she has played at prestigious venues in and around London such as The Half Moon in Putney, The Cobden Club in Notting Hill, The Bedford in Balham, The Boileroom in Guildford, and also performed to appreciative audiences at festivals such as GuilFest, Small World and even further a field doing a series of gigs in Turkey and Holland. She was also nominated for “Best Female Solo Artist’ at the Guildford Music Awards 2010 – an annual event where local musicians are recognised for their talent and contribution to live music.

She has a new EP ‘Pieces Of The Puzzle’ out now, which was recorded in Utrecht, Holland. Joanna was followed by Burning Wick, a film company documenting her time spent making the EP. ''Folkin Around Holland - Pieces Of The Puzzle' is a series of short films from behind the scenes that take you from the very first time they met, through the recording process and into rehearsals and live performance.

From birth singing, dancing and acting came as naturally as breathing. In 2004 attended vocal course at Guildford’s Academy of Contemporary Music before becoming lead singer of her first serious originals band. In 2006, she became one half of Weston and Schonning before picking up the guitar herself. First the confidence, then the response, and now the solo career creating her own unique sound.

Riding a wave in 2010: new album and wider international audiences in 2011… who knows what may come next?
