MAD SPANNER plays thrashy comedy punk aiming to make a loud racket to aggravate the boring status quo. Fuck mediocrity, we are here for all in entertainment and throw up on your shoes!
This page first began as Boredom Killers in 2010, as a hub for a bizarre Youtube sketch show, with three series created by Mark Bashford and I. After a long hiatus, we both soon joined a starting band Insufficient Funds on drums and guitar respectively, and while the band didn't work out it left us both in a more musical creative direction.
Aberystwyth was a dry place for music, especially in those years and even worse for rock music. Tired of asking organizers weekly to book live bands, I decided to make one myself, switching instruments to bass with Mark on guitar as a rebirth of the Boredom Killers name in 2015. We had no drummer, but I was determined not to let that stop us playing live, as a drum machine had to be better than nothing!
While I fondly remember the set in Rummers Bar that was recorded for Youtube, it was clear by the end of 2016 that that west wales was not the most receptive place for nurturing bands starting out, let alone rock bands. And then let alone heavy metal or punk. And then let alone us!! We decided not only to let Boredom Killers go, but also to move out of town altogether. Mark would go to Preston, and I moved to Shrewsbury with the ambition to not only continue the frantic comedic musical outlet but to perform it live where it makes the most (non)sense!
I fell in love with Shrewsburys thriving open mic scene and played often to backing tracks under the new moniker Mad Spanner. One night I found a guitar player, a mutual friend at the time - Jebb, who later joins and settles in the band, in what 2017 looks to be an exciting formative year! We are still looking for a drummer, but even with a drum machine we are always looking for opportunities to play live and kick some ass! And that is the story to this point of a band committed to the stage and makes no apologies!
Sorry.
Much love and biscuits!
