Born in Flint, Michigan, Marva King is most known for her starring role in the 75 plus million dollar-grossing DVD, “Diary of a Mad Black Woman”. This production launched the Massive Mega Million dollar career of its writer/producer Tyler Perry. In Diary, King plays the spurned, attractive, feisty and vengeful housewife Helen. King created her own comedic dialogue in this production. As of August 2010, the former Prince and New Power Generation singer is embarking upon a brand new venture, an entertainment/cooking show for television.
Despite the massive success of her stage debut, King has far more to her stellar resume than just Diary. King started her career very early on, performing since the age of four, and became accomplished at quite a young age. She is heard on albums by Phil Collins, Tupac Shakur, Prince, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Jimmy Cliff, Chaka Khan, and Lionel Richie, just to name a few. She co-wrote the Whispers’ single, “Innocent”, which debuted at #4 on the Billboard Hot Singles Chart. “Innocent” sold over 1 Million copies world wide. She has performed live with artists like Lenny Kravitz, Seal, and Will-I-Am, and has toured with the likes of Stevie Wonder, Prince, and The Isley Brothers.
Marva is beyond any stereotype or genre. Larger than such limitations, her past recordings include music that is Rock, Pop, Hip Hop, R&B, Funk, and Reggae. Her mesmerizing delivery inspired Larry Flick to write in Billboard, “Marva King is a supreme diva, and her name will go down in history as one of the best. In 1997 Prince took her on the road, under his wing, and made her a member of his group, New Power Generation (NPG). Marva performed on most of the songs on his “New Power Soul album, and demonstrated her immense talent as well when she performed live onstage with Prince. Their memorable remakes of Shania Twain’s “Still the One” and Joan Osbourne’s “What If God Was One of Us.” She returned in 2007 for another series of arena, and intimate venue concerts, which included the record breaking “21 Nights Concerts” at the 02 Arena in the UK, as well as recordings on the CD release “Lotus Flower” in 2009, and several appearances in his “bestseller” table book “21 Nights” with his “Purple Highness!” Marva managed 15 shows of her own in between Prince dates. “ Those 2 years were intense! I was exhausted the entire time, but it was so much fun. I’ve learned a lot about performing from Prince.” She lovingly exited the Paisley scene again in 2009 to record her CD project, and reunite with her faithful fans!
Marva, who is also heard on Michael Jackson’s “Bad” album, states of the iconic pop star, “I used to visit and sometimes travel with him although I did not perform on the tours. I spent a lot of time with him, as with his family.”
Stevie Wonder hired Marva as an eager teen. I toured with him, and performed on an album with him that was recorded live in Osaka and Tel Aviv in the mid 90’s, which is his double album, “Natural Wonder” featuring the song, “Master Blaster”. Marva thanks American Idol’s Randy Jackson for her first production job at Sony in the early ‘90s making Marva one of the few female producers in the music industry. Marva is very excited about piercing the international and national airwaves again this year! Her last CD Soul Sistah was given rave reviews, by the British, Asian, and several other European music critics. Her CD entered the top 30 charts at #5. By the following week at the #2 position, and then it quickly surpassed several familiar award winning American artists like Indie Irie, Tina Marie, The Isley Brothers, and Donnell Jones to name a few.
The angels are watching over her as she continues to attract even more new fans that reach out to her daily! She currently released her new single "Steppin'' off her upcoming album titled 360 Deal as well as the video for that single. She will be embarking on a new world tour promoting her new album due out later this year 2012. The prolific vocalist with the four-octave range is releasing her Soulful, melodic & upbeat album Fans & DJs world-wide are anticipating this albums new offerings which includes a variety of up, mid, and slow tempo musical samplings.
