If you look back at the history of music, times of great social unrest have often coincided with the release of great music. Bands wrote songs because they had to, because the opinions inside them simply had to come out. It's perhaps a little odd then, that the current political climate hasn't brought about a similar wave of new music.
Music is more ephemeral than it's ever been, songs are devoid of any conviction or passion and today's next big thing are on the scrapheap tomorrow. However, conviction is not something lacking in Edinburgh four piece Nettles.
Hailing from the mean streets of the city's southside, Nettles' perhaps 'unprivileged' background is what defines them. And though many bands, come from similarly worse off areas, not many are prepared to comment on it. Nettles undoubtedly have that precious commodity in modern music: something to say. And I'd suggest that it may not be long before a lot more people are listening.
