Neverbody are an instrumental trio that deftly combine a cocktail of prog, post-rock & film score influences into a beguiling and atmospheric whole, with musicianship that never gets in the way of strong melodies. Despite lacking vocals, Neverbody are nonetheless profoundly lyrical and guitarist Alex Cottrell plays in a personal and ambitious compositional style that, with motivic impulse, echoes sounds old and new - from Allan Holdsworth to Explosions In The Sky.
After the dissolution of acclaimed jazz rock outfit Glossom in 2016, guitarist Alex Cottrell and drummer Gareth Dawson reformed alongside friend and bassist Andrew Bailey as Neverbody, seeking to lean further into their instrumental influences and create a fusion of the best aspects of prog rock, post-rock and soundtrack music.
The result was a beguiling and atmospheric cocktail of these ideas, with musicianship that sought never to get in the way of strong melodies, with an instrumental method that was nonetheless profoundly lyrical.
Drawing on sounds both old and new - from Allan Holdsworth and King Crimson, to Toe and Explosions in the Sky - the trio released their demo self-titled EP in 2018 and went on to share stages with fellow experimentalists A Burial At Sea, Real Terms and Kusanagi. Later in 2020 Neverbody recorded a live session at Fresh Goods, Birkenhead, opting to track the release’s 5 tunes in the same room with video simultaneously.
After the COVID pandemic, bassist Andrew Bailey stepped away and was replaced with Luke Geraghty and, in autumn 2022, Neverbody finally returned with a reissue of their debut EP and a new single ‘First Light’, a track emblematic of the band’s complex ideas & rich soundscape packed in under 4 minutes.
