Biography

Nicola Kazimir is a multi-faceted artist that crosses genres as well as art in all forms with most ease. What might appear fragmented at first - is actually a true understanding of complexity, context, and a spirit that refuses restriction. His artistic affinities include fine art, running an off-space, writing, video, painting, sculpting, producing, and of course, DJing. The latter Nicola sees as “sound-curation,” a process he describes as "curating an exhibition but live and thus with a character of performance.”

Musically, Nicola Kazimir is one part of the Les Points collective, a unique group of artists based in Zurich. Together, they run the label of the same name and a party called Punkt. (German for point), which has been running since 2009, occupying different places but mainly the famed Zukunft Club.

Les Points, consider artworks like words and music as self-made by the artists, and Nicola believes, "that is what rave/techno culture was about before promotion processes took the rawness, the punk, away. Everything became too designed for my taste, too polished as people cut the errors away, which in fact represent themselves as artists."

This idea of originality and authenticity, Nicola sums up in one word: Dilettant in German (dilettante in English) and for the Les Point collective's music it means their output is "something for everyone and that everyone can reproduce. We don't believe in ‘geniuses' or talents, we believe that we humans are constructs of references occurring throughout our lives. Basically, we are a never-ending construct of samples and appropriations. That's how we treat our music as well: If a track is out, it isn't mine anymore - it's everybody’s. People can love, steal, sample, hate it, or whatever. There is no distinction between those feelings/processes and there never will be. Therefore, it should be available on every channel: vinyl, online, stream, illegal sites, torrents etc. Vinyl is still our preferred format as you got the gatefold artwork, then the tracks that are produced on analogue gear, so it makes sense they are also on analogue format, but it is not a necessity."

This freedom of format and artistic approach goes to show that Nicola is part of a generation that combines the best of both worlds, the old and the new. He calls it "Cyberspace Youth 2.0, a trans-medial sense" he has when DJing and that allows him to "grasp both, analogue and digital." For his theory he says, "music is still the strongest and most fitting practise.”

On the production front Nicola Kazimir signed the first release of Toi.Toi.Musik's sublabel, Subsequent, together with another member of the Les Points collective, Barbir. Such move kick starts the beginning of a relationship with our agency based on music, a like-minded philosophy and friendship. The Toi.Toi.Agency introduces Nicola by bringing a mix as part of our Toi.Toi.Mix Series. Enjoy it.
