Biography

ONE IN TEN are Scotland’s premium UB40 tribute band, we are a 6 piece from all over central Scotland, recent runners up in tribute band of the year ONE IN TEN have been going from strength to strength since our inception in 2020 , last year seen a significant rise of the band playing many sell out shows and building a fan base that are both committed and loyal, the aim this year is to bring our music to as many people in Scotland as possible, with bookings so far in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee, Paisley , East Lothian , mid Lothian , Lanarkshire and the borders we are looking to expand even further, Scotland’s festival scene is another target for ONE IN TEN this year so we can bring over 40 years of hits from UB40 to a wider audience,

Band Members Bio (The Band)

Kenny Mccardle: Is singer and lead guitarist.

Kenny has been a mainstay of the Scottish Reggae scene for the past 40 years, starting as a drummer he soon moved on to lead vocals with reggae bands such as RED/WORKHOUSE & RED TO RED, most recently he founded One In Ten UB40 Tribute

Graham Millar: Sax Player : Tenor & Alto

Graham (The Sax), has been playing both alto and Tenor Sax for 30+ years, during that time he has played and depth for many different genre of top bands in theatres and festivals from Pink Floyd to UB40, to SKA to modern dance and Thin Lizzy, the list goes on.

Currently he works on a number of projects, playing with Scotland’s only UB40 tribute where he is the lead soloist along with a corporate band doing large events and when available on his own we will do a lot of solo work like weddings/hen nights/stag nights/parties etc, this music varies pending on the audience, it could be Ibiza dance tunes to Rock n Roll to basically all different genres of music. As you can see Graham is a very experienced and accomplished saxophonist.

Gavin Spowart: Trumpet Player

Gavin has worked as a freelance professional session musician since 1977. During this period he has worked on Tours, West End Musicals Summer Seasons, Cruise ships, Radio and Television work, and for the past twenty years Edinburgh Kings Theatre Pantomime.

Holywood Film Star Bob Hope, Televised VE day programme Onboard QE2 and Royal Albert Hall London concert, Gene Pitney, Tony Christie, Frankie Vaughan, Matt Monroe, Tommy Cooper, Sir Norman Wisdom, Danny La Rue, Paul O’Grady, Engelbert Humperdinck, Jimmy Tarbuck, Russ Abbot, The Bee Gees, Ronan Keating, The Drifters, The Platters, The Three Degrees, Jane McDonald, Brian Conley and Ronan Keating.

Highlights of Gavin’s career have been as a member of Freddie Starr’s Orchestra playing on the Televised Royal Variety Show and Live from THe London Palladium. A period spanning over seventeen years with his old Boss Joe Longthorne, Royal Albert Hall, London Palladium and O2 Indigo arena concerts, also BBC Pebble Mill appearance,

Also playing with The Northern Dance Orchestra at Elton Johns 50th Birthday Celebration at Hammersmith Palais London.

As a member of One In Ten, Gavin has become a converted UB40 fan and enjoys playing in the band alongside the other members which promises to be a busy year.

Ivor. E.Key: Keyboard player for One in Ten.

Living in Scotland, Ivor has been in the band from its inception. He contributes vocals in the shows providing harmony to the main singer Kenny. Ivor is a truly experienced and accomplished keyboard and guitar player.

Jose de las Heras: Bass Player

Jose de las Heras has been an active part of the Edinburgh ska scene for many years, playing with a number of bands and recording a number of albums with different bands, a truly experienced and accomplished Bass player.

Garry Simpson: Drummer

Garry is a Scottish musician and composer. Born in Dundee Scotland in 2001, he started playing the guitar at age eight beginning by listening to rock 'n' roll records and copying what he heard. While still in primary school aged twelve, Garry achieved his SQA Advanced Higher performance award, which gave him the motivation to continue further academically with music. Garry got an electric drum kit for his twelfth birthday and finally got an acoustic set for his seventeenth birthday.

At age eleven and dressed in his primary school uniform with shorts plus a cap, he was invited to play “Highway To Hell” on Guitar impersonating his hero Angus Young by the touring AC/DC tribute band “Livewire AC/DC” on stage at Ayr Town Hall.

At Kinross High School, he participated in as many musical events as possible. A key part in his musical development was the contribution made by his drum instructor Tom Gordon. Garry fell in love with jazz at age fourteen thanks to Richard Michael of the Fife Youth Jazz Orchestra. Garry was awarded "Most Promising Drummer/Percussionist" at the 2017 Perform in Perth Competition and won that year's "Open Class Drumkit" class. Later that year he opened for The Red-Hot Chilli Pipers at Kinross High Street's reopening celebration.

During his time at Kinross High School, Garry established himself as a sought after working musician with his function band "The Freeholds", jazz trio "GEM", UB40 tribute band OneIn Ten and played guitar and drums professionally in musical theatre productions across Scotland.

In 2019, one year after getting his own acoustic drum kit to practise on, Garry was accepted into the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland to study Jazz drumkit, starting in 2020. Garry's ambitions are to become a more rounded musician and explore musical journeys with other talented musicians, so that he can be a full time professional musician.
