Straight outta Malibu, Peachfuzz have gone back to vinyl to bring you the perfect single to make the summer last all year long. One glance at the cover, a loving homage* to the Beach Boys’ All Summer Long, and you know exactly what you’re in for: 7 inches of pure, sun-drenched, So Cal summertime fun.
Since being exiled from Echo Park due to his inability to grow an ironic beard, peachfuzz songwriter Andrew has been high-bare-nating on Malibu’s sandy shores, observing and studying the local inhabitants and their coastal customs and rituals.
The result is “Zuma Girl,” a powerpop poke at Malibu surf culture. The story of a stranger on strange sand, Zuma Girl takes you back in time, to a Malibu when neighbors like “Keith Moon and Steve McQueen would stop by for drinks with Mom and Dad.” Our hero croons for love, acceptance, and surf lessons from his Broad Beach beauty, bravely declaring in the end, “Everybody knows the MLO** is phony!” in hopes that one day surfers, Vals, hodads, and kooks can all get along.
Side II is a surf-guitar instrumental recorded totally live onto 2-inch tape, inspired by the infamous waves at Westward Beach--“Drainpipes” in local vernacular. The intricate guitar and Middle Eastern flair, mixed with unrelenting drum fills, will make you feel like you’re riding the Malibu waves on a magic carpet that never wipes out.
