Biography

Originally from South Shields in the North East of England, Rebecca was initially inspired by Harpo Marx in the 1930’s black & white movies and went on to follow her dream to become a professional harpist.

At the age of 13, Rebecca’s harp-journey began with a 34 string pilgrim lever harp and lessons from Janet Bennett in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne.

Two years later Rebecca moved to Manchester to study pedal harp at Chetham’s School of Music with Eira Lynn Jones, who remained her teacher for the following seven years when Rebecca was awarded a place at the Royal Northern College of Music in 2006.

Whilst a student at the RNCM she played for all the college orchestras and toured Europe with the Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. In November 2007 Rebecca performed at the Huddersfield International Contemporary Music Festival as part of a concert of pieces for 20 harps and a few years later the group performed at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead with a special concert of music by John Cage.

Lately Rebecca’s musical journey has taken her away form the UK as she now spends most of the year sailing the high seas as a soloist and resident harpist on the CUNARD Queen Elizabeth cruise ship. Rebecca has always loved to travel (especially by sea) and by playing the harp and seeing the world, she is achieving both dreams simultaneously. Since setting sail from Southampton in 2011 on her first voyage as harpist on Queen Mary 2 she has been ‘collecting her countries’ and the total is now over 60!
