South African born Samantha Blackburn has, in recent years established herself as one of London’s best female talents to emerge onto the scene. She is currently a hot name amongst her London counterparts and has recently been securing gigs at some of the capital’s coolest parties. Making her London debut at Mooch, soon after playing at Jaded and most recently obtaining a residency for Get Diverted

at Brixton Clubhouse. At Get Diverted she has had the opportunity to warm up for the likes of Slam and Paul Woolford, Anja Schneider, Mr C, Catz N Dogz. Samantha also currently holds a residency with Deepvibes radio and recently played on Ibiza Global Radio.

2012 has been a remarkable year for Samantha. Her DJing talent has reached an international level which in September took her across to seas back to her home town of South Africa, Time in the Philippines and also the renowned Area 51 on Boracay Island. She also made her Debut appearance in the main room at Fabric this year playing for WYS! The future hold big things for Samantha.

Samantha emanates passion and emotion when she is behind the decks and expresses herself in a way that captivates her followers. She radiates warmth into her audience and creates a memorable vibe with her excellent track selection. This has recently been recognised on the circuit and Samantha has been labeled one to “keep an eye on” by Mixmag. This is just the beginning of what is turning out to be a hugely exciting and fruitful career for Samantha.

Samantha has teamed up with Chloe Fontaine and created Byrdz back in August 2011 as a platform to showcase and promote female DJs in London while adding their expressive, passionate styles and skill on the circuit as solo DJs, both holding residencies at some of London’s most avant- garde and leading-edge parties and also regular slots on local radio stations. The promotion is rapidly evolving and Byrdz is now booking international female artists, the future is looking bright for these talented girls.

Samantha’s love affair with music began whilst growing up in Pretoria when she received a Walkman as a 9th birthday gift. She started listening to bands like Nirvana, The Cure, Violent Femmes and R.E.M. and submerged herself in the grunge/gothic era. This rapidly led on to her compiling list of tracks and making mix tapes for family and friends.

As Samantha grew older, her taste matured and developed as she became more interested in the music surrounding her roots and culture. Becoming familiar with the tribal, percussive sound that reflects her music today.

It was when she decided to make a move to London in 2003 and on a night out at the infamous club The End, Samantha was inspired by Miss Kitten to buy a pair of technics 1210 turntables. It was around this time that Samantha truly started experimenting. Fusing together popping percussion and brazen beats, with a slightly two-step influence, with soulful melodies and atmospheric chimes, cultivating her rolling tribal tech style.
