Shona Brown is a musician and solo performer based in Glasgow. She uses looping technology to layer her flutes and vocals with electronic sounds to create atmospheric songs and soundscapes.
Shona grew up in Motherwell and began playing the flute at age 12. At the age of 13 she recorded with Mogwai on their album “Young Team”. This experience taught her that she definitely wanted to become a musician. She went on to study classical flute and won many awards including a Donald Dewar Arts Award, a Masters with distinction from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and was a semi-finalist in the BBC Young Musician of the Year.
After her studies she continued to work with many notable artists and groups including the National Theatre of Scotland, Barbara Thompson, Eddie McGuire and Cora Bissett. She set up SoundRoutes, an organisation through which she runs a 150-strong community choir and other workshops and recording projects. In 2012 she created a groundbreaking project called “Changing Key” which enabled prisoners of HMP Addiewell to release a 4 track EP which raised thousands of pounds for Shelter Scotland.
She released her debut EP of folk/world inspired acoustic songs and instrumentals “Gather the Ocean” in 2011. Since then she has had a change of direction, setting out with the goal of engineering her own music and working with a more ambient and electronic sound. She now performs solo with a more electronic set, which she debuted with five shows at the Edinburgh Fringe 2014 and received favourable reviews.
Through her ambitious 10in10 project Shona is releasing 10 recordings in 10 months (on the 10th of every month), from November to August. Releasing EPs and double A-sides amongst singles, the sum of 10in10 will be 15 tracks in 10 months. Her first release was a 3 track EP The Narrow Road and the project ends with single You Are My Music.
Shona was delighted to perform live on BBC Radio Scotland, on STV Glasgow and Celtic Music Radio in recent months and at iconic venues Glasgow Barrowlands with Mogwai and King Tuts, supporting Gabriella Cilmi's new band, All Kings and Queens. She looks forward to appearing across Scotland at gigs and festivals this summer, including Glasgow's West Festival, Merchant City Festival, MugStock and Edinburgh Fringe.
Shona celebrates completing 10in10 in August with another run of shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
