From the small town of Newtownards in Northern Ireland, Stones From David burst onto the scene in the winter of 2021. And as the new-found alias of frontman Michael James, it’s no wonder this newcomer has already positioned himself at the forefront of Ireland’s indie-folk movement. With a raw vocal, colourful melodies and lyricism beyond his years, Stones From David leaves you captivated and seeking more.
Busking on the streets of Belfast and cover gigging at the weekend, Micheal found his feet the honest way. His potential, however, didn’t go un-noticed and he was soon offered a scholarship at the British & Irish modern Music Institute; once home to household names such as George Ezra, James Bay and Tom Odell. Unsurprisingly, the list of Michael’s accolade’s then continued to grow as he came home and took his local scene by storm. In 2016, he came runner up in Roots Records’ Young Singer Songwriter competition which saw him play shows up and down the country such as Sunflower Festival, Dalriada and Belfast Nashville Songwriters. He then played a series of support slots for the likes of Jim Lauderdale and Skinny Living.
After a short hiatus Michael returned with a bang in 2020, releasing his debut single ‘Solicitous.’ A personal story, sharing Michael’s own struggles with mental health, he was truly taken aback by its warm reception. Notably, Solicitous gained airplay on BBC Radio Ulster, in addition to being chosen as AcousticYards Song of the Week and hitting No.1 on HWWS’ Indie Music Radio USA charts.
Further success soon followed as Michael’s debut EP ‘Seapark’ earned him critical acclaim across the UK and Europe. Featuring staple singles such as ‘Golden’ and ‘Brand New Life’, this five track ensemble was crowned ‘Album of the Week’ by BBC Ulster and even graced the airwaves at Banks Radio Australia. He gathered a cult following in the USA too, where he has since shared the stories behind his songs with listeners of the KitchenKillaz Podcast.
Due to the pandemic, Michael was unable to accompany his latest success with live shows. His fanbase, however, continued to grow and 2021 saw him sell out his first headline show. In his own words, “This was the ‘curtain call’ on Michael James but merely the “pre-theatre” for Stones From David.
