Crywank, Manchester’s own folk-punk celebrities have truly captivated fans across the globe with their genuine but playful melancholy. Having played shows all over the UK and Europe to the US and Canada, the 2 and sometime 3-piece (made up of Jay Clayton on vocals and guitar, Dan Watson on drums and occasionally Jules Noel on bass) are well known for their astute commentary on existential fears and the idiosyncrasies of the disillusioned millennials and Gen Z folk who relate to Jay’s words. The band had planned to break up in 2019, booking an extensive farewell tour that got interrupted by Covid. They completed the tour after a hiatus, then announced in 2024 they were no longer breaking up, much to the relief of their fanbase, many of whom have connected to the band during their most formative years.

The music is beautifully controlled, a well measured balance of delightfully delicate anti-folk with lyrics and delivery that bring a clear emo influence, and moments of heavier, chaotic release that are cathartically punk. Jay’s voice cuts clear over simplistic finger-picked chords, that layered with the extra instrumentation, becomes so three dimensional, metamorphosing, climbing out of the window of it’s acoustic bedroom beginnings, sneaking off into the night, maturing into the pillar of the genre Crywank’s music has become.

The Ferret was recently one of the early gigs on Crywank’s spectacular “16 cities in 24 hours” world-record-bothering feat. Completing this adventure on a shoestring budget, pulling favours from friends and keeping things DIY, they really demonstrated not only their own skill as a musician, but also represented the drive, passion and abilities of the DIY music community as a whole, who work tirelessly every day with little financial compensation, and are capable of delivering incredible shows all the time.
