THE VARUKERS

Friday July 18th

The Varukers are a British punk band formed in 1979 by vocalist Anthony “Rat” Martin. They have been producing highly respected and influential recordings since the early 1980s. The band played what was to become known as the “v beat”, rather than the drum style of Discharge’s “d beat”. But, in common with Discharge, the Varukers’ lyrics carry a political outlook and ideology. Basically being pissed off with the things they see going on around them, and wanting to say their piece about it!

When recording in the early 1980s, they were part of a broader trend known as “UK 82”, the second generation punk, or UK hardcore. Bands such as the Varukers, Discharge, Charged GBH, Chaos UK, the Exploited, and Amebix all took the existing 1977-era punk sound and melded it with the incessant, heavy, pounding drumbeats and a wall of sound grating, distorted guitars and rumbling bass sound of the new wave of British heavy metal (NWOBHM) of bands like Motorhead and Iron Maiden. The new, harder-edged style also tended to use much darker, more nihilistic, abrasive and more graphically violent lyrics, and vocals that were often shouted rather than sung. With repeated verses and choruses to hammer home the point of the words.

While the Varukers initially split in 1989, vocalist Rat and guitarist Biff put the band pack together in 1991, and since then have continued with their hard-hitting take-no-prisoners style of punk rock ever since. They will continue to do so as long as wild, spirited people out there want to throw themselves into the pit, play it loud and continue to support the band.
