When most of us picture New Year’s Eve, we all have a pretty similar scene playing out. Drunk lads spilling onto the street, chanting. Women telling strangers they love their makeup. Everyone grabbing their friends, cheering and jumping, and kissing them as the countdown finishes, they spill their glass of bubbly but don’t care. Or don’t notice. Basically, it looks something like the iconic NYE picture taken in Manchester in 2015. You know the one.

But if you’ve decided to take it in a different direction this year and hang out with your significant other instead, you might feel a bit lost. How will the night go? Will it be the same as when you’re out with your friends? Or are you looking for a completely different vibe? How should you guys spend it? Well, you’re in the right place. If you’re looking for fun, romantic things to do on New Year’s Eve, we’ve got you. Here are our favourite New Year’s Eve ideas for couples…

Hit the town

Just because you’ve decided to spend the night with your significant other, doesn't mean you can’t go out. You could go to that new bar you’ve been meaning to check out and see who can handle the most sambucas. Or you could try that cocktail bar with the skyline view. If you’re both into the same music, why not hit a club, rave, or gig? It’s NYE so there will be plenty of brilliant events on, no matter what your vibe.

Leave the city

Why not change your setting entirely? Check out a different city and see what events and other activities you can get up to over there. Or you could take it one step further and have a weekend away somewhere in Europe. Soak up a new culture, indulge in new dishes and local alcohol, go sightseeing, get involved with local New Year’s traditions, and check out local bars and events.

Eat a delicious meal

Everyone loves a good meal. Aside from food being one of mankind's greatest contributions to the world, it facilitates talking, bonding, and can help you unwind. And, of course, it’s great to not have to wash up at the end. But if washing up doesn’t bother you, cooking a meal together can be an even stronger bonding experience. Cooking together can help you realise how much fun your partner can bring to the mundane. It’s one of the most romantic things to do on New Year’s Eve.

Go see a performance or a movie

Watching your favourite shows together can be a great bonding experience. There are dozens of theatre performances and movies on from Aladdin to Bring It On, to drive-in screenings of Star Wars and The Greatest Showman. What’s better than cuddling up with your body weight in snacks, a big Tango Ice Blast, and your favourite film. It’s the perfect New Year’s Eve for couples.

Do something new

Everyone has that one thing they haven’t done yet that they really want to. It could be paintballing, go-karting, ice skating, getting a tattoo, whatever. Doing something new is the perfect way to set the tone for 2022. We should be exploring, seeking adventure and trying new things. Why not start now?

Another cool idea is attending a class together. You could learn to cook, dance, speak a new language, the opportunities are endless. Granted you won’t pick up these skills after one class. But it could spark a passion that fuels you to take it seriously in the new year.

Head over to your local comedy club

Have you ever been stuck in a laughing fit that just never ends? You get to the point where you aren’t even laughing anymore, you’re silent with the occasional wheeze, your stomach hurts but in a good way, your cheeks hurt from being stretched from ear to ear, and you’re just slapping your knee and flapping your arms around. It’s brilliant. The only way you could make it better is by sharing the experience with someone you love. So why not scope out some live comedy events?

Hanging out with your significant other is unmatched. It’s amazing to be with someone that gets you who you can be yourself around. And spending the night with them is the perfect way to end the year. And with so many events on, you and your partner are spoilt for choice. So what are you waiting for? Start planning your night now, book those tickets, and have a night to remember!
