Accessible dance music has had a cracking resurgence in the past few years, topping the charts once more and putting a throbbing beat all over daytime radio. This year we have already seen the resurgence hit in full swing; with number ones from Rudimental, Disclosure, Daft Punk and the Bingo Players, all pulsating with a club groove. The latter have been priming their entry into the upper elite of the DJ world for a hot minute and as news hits of them headlining Electirc Brixton for their record label Hysteria Records’ showcase, we’ve selected them as our Artist of the Week.
The Dutch duo knocked out their first record in 2006 and have since been on an upward trajectory which shows no signs of relenting anytime soon. As one of the most prominent exponents of what became known as the ‘Dirty Dutch’ sound, the Bingo Players aural template is based upon bouncy basslines, killer riffs and speaker shredding synths; the perfect embodiment of rough and ready Twenty First Century club music.
They teamed up with fellow Dutch producers Chocolate Puma in 2008 on the monolithic ‘Disco Electrique’, which helped blast the duo into the spotlight and showcase that typical Bingo Players groove. Boasting a call to arms vocal and a killer riff, it then melted into a fist pumping bassline driven monster, becoming one of the biggest club hits over the course of 2008 and 2009, omnipresent everywhere from Miami to Milton Keynes.
The duo haven’t relented since. 2011 saw them hit hard with the Ibiza anthem ‘Cry (Just a little)’, another trademark slab of deep and dirty club fodder which catapulted them right to the forefront of the ever expanding US market. For a generation of new dance fans the Bingo Players sound was the perfect groove, and with further high profile collaborations with Nicky Romero and Heather Bright, aka Bright Lights, all hitting home, they have become one of the biggest draws on the other side of the pond. And then came ‘Rattle’, another typhoon raising club track that then saw a vocal version from K-Pop impresarios Far East Movement which ended with that aforementioned Number One slot.
They’ve released on stellar imprints such as Ministry of Sound, Strictly Rhythm and Australian major label Onelove over the years, but’s it their very own Hysteria records which has really seen them take off in recent years. It’s been the starting point for their slew of megahits and also a platform for them to spotlight the music of others, with the likes of Mike Hawkins, Kenneth G and Alvaro all beneficiaries.
And as we get further entrenched into 2013, Bingo Players have now announced information about their new live setup. Having been fixtures on some of the globe’s biggest festivals in recent years, events like Tomorrowland, Electric Daisy Carnival and Ultra where the focus is on breath-taking production, they will be taking a new jaw-dropping spectacle on the road, including a headline stint for them at Hysteria’s label showcase at the 02 Academy in September.
We’ll leave you on the below video which showcases their set in the sunshine of Miami’s Ultra Music Festival earlier in the year, an extravaganza of breath-taking light action, pyrotechnics and blistering beats. They’ll be bringing this undeniable showmanship to London in Autumn – head here for more details.
