Can you hear that, Manchester? It's the sound of something coming. Something big. Tomorrow night, between the hallowed walls of Sound Control, a brand new night will be kicking off. One that's set to shake the city to its limits.
Bassunique is the brainchild of Sean Mbaya, better known to most as one quarter of Manchester band Kid British. This is a brand new venture for Sean, whose love of reggae combined with other styles of music inspired him to start the project. Working with his partner Scott, Sean hopes to bring an entirely new sort of night to the students and music lovers of Manchester.
"It's unique 'cause there's all styles of dance mixed in with the reggae flavour played on the night" says Sean. "There's good headline acts playing through each month. And it's a chance for actual music acts to play, and interact with the crowd."
The launch party tomorrow night (Tuesday 1st March) will see a host of ragga, jungle, and dubstep artists performing over two floors, with a live appearance by Virus Syndicate and DJ sets by Lionfire vs DJ Yoof, DJ Euphonique, and Leadbelly.
After the massive launch party, the night will continue on a weekly basis, bringing a new flavour to Tuesday nights in the city. Already confirmed for Tuesday 22nd March is the legendary David Rodigan. Tickets for David Rodigan at Bassunique are available here.
But rather than focusing on big name bookings, Sean has a clear vision for the night; and is keen to give a platform to more up and coming talent.
"We don't just go and search for the top acts about, but the up and coming ones who we think will make a good career in the future. We like the DJs who aren't afraid to catch you off guard to catch your attention; making you listen to new tracks.
"We don't disregard those who specialise in playing, for example, dubstep or a mixture of electro. But we still allow them to headline and play a great night within our whole theme.
"We'll have a guest booking every other week, but that's not the focus point. The way we do it is that we find a guest we feel will represent the night correctly. If that falls into the every other week scenario well happy days (laughs). Most importantly, it's the local resident DJs we've got - with the majority of them having their own radio station slots in Manchester. They've got great talent as much as anyone out there."
Bassunique launches tomorrow night at Sound Control, from 10pm until late. Tickets are £5 in advance of £6 on the door before midnight and £7 after.
