An undisputed titan of the dance music world and a household name for rave fans everywhere, the Ministry of Sound brand and its many successful ventures - from nightclubs to compilation albums and a world-conquering record label - have been with us for three whole decades. Say that again - Three. Whole. Decades. Quite an achievement we think you'll agree, and one that very few will ever manage to equal.
Launched back in 1991 under the moniker 'Sound of Ministry', early club nights the likes of ‘Rulin’, ‘Frisky’ and ‘Open’ quickly grew in popularity, drawing in huge numbers week in, week out. But it wasn't until they began to branch out into making compilation records in '93 that things really began to take off. These sought-after anthologies, for many of us, were our first introduction to what would later become one of the biggest electronic music brands in the business.
Collections such as The Annual series, curated and mixed by DJ icons the likes of Pete Tong and Judge Jules, Trance Nation and Clubbers Guide all played a huge part in bringing back-then underground names to the attention of the masses. Artists who became recognised as the pioneers, the trailblazers and some of the first superstar DJ's in the world. These albums tell the story of UK dance music and how it came to rule over the international scene.
To further continue last week's celebrations, reflect upon the illustrious past of this still prolific behemoth of music and highlight some of those aforementioned DJ names, we asked the Ministry of Sound team to put together a special Beats Per Minute playlist.
Check out all of their selections below, highlighting some of their favourite tracks and those which assisted in putting the brand on the map, in the Ministry of Sound X Beats Per Minute playlist...
