South east London electronic musician Ben Hayes has announced that he will visit Liverpool with his live show performing Aphex Twin's classic Selected Ambient Works 85-92. Hayes and his band will appear at the 24 Kitchen Street venue on Thursday 18 October and Manchester's Band on the Wall on Friday 19th October. When he performed this show at the Jazz Cafe in London earlier in 2018, tickets were sold out less than 10 minutes after being released.
A multi instrumentalist who has emerged to wider acclaim over recent years, Hayes has a distinct and at times experimental sound within electronic music. He is known in particular as being a thrilling live performer.
His band on the occasion will include Jake Long (Maisha, Jamie Isaac, Poppy Ajudha), Jack Stephenson-Oliver (Vels Trio, Poppy Ajudha, Charlotte dos Santos) and Maxwell Owin (Joe Armon Jones collaborator), all players from London's jazz scene. They will play the Aphex Twin album in full, diverging imaginatively from the original template.
Probably the most beloved of all Aphex Twin's albums, Selected Ambient Works 85-92 helped establish a future for both Aphex Twin and Warp Records as leaders in the field of electronic music. The label had previously had much success with tougher house and techno, but with the emergence of Aphex Twin's quieter, intelligent sound, alongside that of Warp peers Autechre and Black Dog Productions, a revolutionary new strand of techno was unleashed upon the world. It would be one that Warp Records and Aphex Twin would excel at and expand upon. Selected Ambient Works 85-92 was the first definitive album statement within this genre and is arguably one of the best electronic albums of all time.
