Whisper it quietly, but there's a secret of epic proportions bubbling on the South Wales underground - Cellar Door. For nearly two years the party has celebrated the real joys of the underground, eschewing headliners for tour de forces through various strains of electronic music through a cast of residents and regulars (never billed - the DJ line up is always 'undercover'), keeping the vibe focused on the people that populate the dancefloor rather than those controlling it.
The focus is borne out of experience, with one of the promoters being Jimpy. A legend in South Wales during his time as resident of iconic nightspots Vision and Hippo Club, he cut his teeth during the superclub era whilst playing alongside the likes of Sasha and Paul Oakenfold in the late nineties and start of the century. Cellar Door was borne out of the idea to go back to the original aesthetic of the reason we rave.
It means a few other factors get to shine thoroughly, the first being the venue. Held in The Vaults, a Grade II listed converted former bank complete with huge vault and banking hall, it allows for each month to witness a transformation which keeps the focus fresh and not needing to rest back on a big draw DJ to keep things exciting.
Instead the theme runs amok, as evidenced by their party in April adopting a Willy Wonka aesthetic (watch the video above), with previous incarnations including Nightmare before Christmas and Circus. With the underground vault reverberating to the thudding soundtrack, raiding house, techno, electro, trance and more, the banking hall is transformed in a cinema showing retro cartoons.
The clubnight turns two on May 10th, promising another ebullient showcase in the venue with the DJs, as ever, under cover. There's no word on the theme as of yet but with Cellar Door's history you can be assured it will be high quality. Head here for tickets.
