It’s back. Liverpool’s premier clubnight has finished its temporary retreat into summer’s long shadows and returns with a pow-wow of rave bombast, fresh in the mindset that the old lady who has housed their hedonistic shenanigans for the last years has been graciously given a new lease of life. The Masque, fresh from its recent take-over, has been gutted, remodelled and most importantly fattened up with a stonking new soundsystem and Chibuku has the honour of curtain-raising the opening session on Saturday September 19th. It’s time for Liverpool to get funky once more.
In order to really showcase the new and much improved venue for Chibuku, they’ve recruited a cartel of rave swashbucklers to really test the capabilities to the limit. Top of this list is none other than Chicago’s rudeboy of electro Felix da Housecat. A perennial Chibuku favourite, Felix has been tearing up the scouse dancefloor on an annual basis for what seems like an eternity, constantly bringing a freshness and inimitably honed ear which defines Chibuku’s blistering aural mandate. London based DJ and producer du jour Burns makes the trip up north and is being widely tipped to finish 2009 as one of the year’s brightest stars. Touring as support for Deadmau5 is a pretty strong indication of this man’s calibre. The guys are joined by local rising star Mr Paul.
Then in the loft it’s the turn of the funky breakbeats to get on the go. Dillinja is easily the most sonically fierce of any drum n bass DJ to sit on the planet. Bringing a sound so fat he’s become the nemesis of sound engineers across the globe, he’s tantalisingly remained the focal point for the music in its most powerful form. One Chibuku the sound was so brutal it caused the ceiling to literally cave in; the new Masque has been primed and readied to deal with someone as grotesquely brilliant as him. Light fingered scratch assassin Kentaro, hyphy merchant Nero and Liverpool’s pioneering hip-hop and funk maestros No Fakin’ round off the room.
And as ever Chibuku wouldn’t be representing properly unless they showcased something otherworldly in the third room, now newly named Ink. Friendly Fires have been the buzz band on everyone’s lips in 2009, allaying ethereal songwriter with a gorgeous electronic palette and taking the festival season by form and their eponymous album has already achieved great acclaim. A rare DJ set provides the opportunity to gaze into their influences and support comes from another Scouse sonic scientist withy Revo at the helm. The Full Line-Up
