London rapper Chip, aka Chipmunk, has announced a show in Manchester, his only solo date so far scheduled for 2018. Despite being one of the UK's biggest grime and hip hop MCs of the last decade, he has chosen the relatively intimate environs of the O2 Ritz as the venue for the concert and will appear there on Tuesday 4th September.
Mentored by grime pioneer Wiley, like Tinchy Stryder and Dizzee Rascal before him, Chipmunk (real name Jahmaal Fyffe) shot to fame via three mixtapes and a significant live presence which lead to him being awarded two MOBO awards in2008.
He signed to Sony Columbia when he was just 18 years old and started moving away from making grime exclusively, venturing into more mainstream US-influenced hip hop styles. In late 2009 he released his biggest track 'Oopsy Daisy' and his debut artist album proper 'I Am Chipmunk', following this with 'Transition' in 2011.
Although he continued to issue mixtape releases, and a fast flurry of diss tracks aimed at the likes of Tinie Tempah, Bugzy Malone and Yungen, it wasn't until 'League of My Own II' in 2017 that he would release another album. Named after his breakthrough mixtape, the album marked Chip's 10 year anniversary and featured guests Giggs, Wiley, Donae'o, D Double E and Loick Essien. He recently released a new single, the Lil Silva And Sampha produced 'Darth Vader', in summer 2018, prior to his appearances at Leeds Festival, and aforementioned Manchester date.
