Wednesday 6th August sees one of hip hop's most treasured players descend on Manchester - De La Soul legend DJ Maseo, who will be taking over the gloriously intimate The Liars Club venue for an essential journey through hip hop, funk and soul.
For the uninitiated - Maseo forms one part of the revered Long Island hip hop trio De La Soul, acting as DJ producer and part time MC. The band formed in 1987 paving the way and writing the rules for hip hop as we know it today, with eclectic sampling, out there lyrics and funked up rhythms that can be witnessed in classics such as 'Me, Myself and I' below.
Their seminal musical contributions were pioneering in their jazz, rap, funk and soul influences, a stance that helped widen the scope of hip hop enormously, whilst at the same tame brought the genre to the attention of the wider public, something that has cemented their stature throughout the musical hemisphere.
Maseo, whose sonic vision shaped the output of the NYC three piece, will spin a selection of old school eclectic beats, well worn classics and off-the-radar oddities that will fully represent the feats of De La Soul, made even more unmissable thanks to the intimate setting that he'll be appearing in.
