After Carl Cox announced late last year that 2016 would be his last season at Space Ibiza due to a change in ownership, speculation mounted as to what the club would be turned into.
It was confirmed that Pepe Roselló, who has owned Space for 27 years, would hand the lease over to Matutes Group who own Ushuaia (located opposite one another in Playa D'en Bossa). So, would it be transformed into another hotel? Or a golf club? Or a mall?
Now Abel Matutes Prats, the CEO of Palladium Hotel Group and VP of the Matutes Group, has spoken to Diaro de Ibiza about the plans for the island's most iconic superclub, denying completely that it would be turned into a shopping centre.
“Obviously we want to keep it as a club, but also want to dedicate it to the audience in which we are now focusing, which will be complementary to Ushuaïa," he said.
The new owners are restricted by the club’s current “class 41” license, which limits the venue’s uses to leisure and recreation and stops the space being used for "hotels and merchandising".
The group are aiming to re-open the club by summer 2017.
