ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVES
Live Nation recognises that Download creates environmental impacts through the transport of goods and people, the use of resources and the generation of large volumes of waste that contribute to global environmental problems such as climate change.
We recognise the moral and business imperatives of integrating sustainable solutions into the heart of the business and are committed to delivering an event that continually improves its environmental performance.
We have worked with Sustain to identify our significant environmental impacts and followed the environmental management hierarchy approach to reducing these. Initially this focused on reducing the amount of resources we use and waste we produce. We've then looked at using alternative more sustainable resources and ensuring that our waste is either reused or recycled. We have employed a Leeds University student, Kim Rhodes, to be present on site form build to break to audit our environmental performance on an ongoing basis during the festival.
As a result of this we have been able to implement the following sustainable initiatives into this years Download festival:
Transport
- Launched a lift share program to help users commute to the festival
- Introduced a shuttle bus between the local public transport nodes
- Reduced the number of car parking spaces available and began charging for parking
- During the festival staff will be living on site to reduce the number of local journeys
- Introduced bikes for staff travel around the site
Energy / Resource use
- All site lighting will be using energy efficient bulbs
- Site wide energy efficiency program to turn off unused equipment
- Biodiesel will be trialled for the production village power supply
- There will be no programs this year; they will be blue-toothed to visitors as they enter the site.
Waste Management
- At the end of the event all unwanted tents and camping equipment will be collected and donated to local Scout groups and Tents for Africa.
- There will be a deposit charged on beer cups that will be refunded on return; all of these cups will then be recycled.
- We have worked in partnership with NW Leicestershire District Council to install segregated paper, cans and plastic bins on site that will be uplifted on a regular basis and sent for recycling.
- The University of Central England, as part of the Event Design Course will be given Used cans from the site to create a piece of art during the event that will then be recycled back into more cans by a local charity employing the disadvantaged.
Stewardship
- We have brought on specific environmental groups / charities to give advice to festival goers about improving their environmental impacts away from the event.
- Crafty Crapper will be onsite to compost human waste from the toilets.
We are already planning for 2008 and intend to add extra initiatives in place by then covering the extensive use of renewable energy, intensive energy efficiency programs, composting of all food waste, increased use of recycled materials and improved transport solutions.
