Southgate's media conference comments:

Following the England squad announcement for the World Cup, Southgate answered questions in a media conference. Here are some of the highlights:

Southgate commented on how it was important to get the balance of the squad right saying, “we’re lighter on depth in some positions than others but we think we’ve got everything covered”. He also said how, with a larger squad, they’re able to take more risks.

When asked why Maddison was in, Southgate praised the player, commenting on how he’s been playing well, has earned the right to play in the World Cup, and how he’s a different type of threat to the others.

When asked how big of a gamble it is to include players such as Kalvin Phillips and Kyle Walker, Southgate said, “Kalvin is free of injury” and that Kyle isn’t back in full training yet, but will be before the end of the group stage. He also said it was a difficult call with Reece James as he’s a fantastic player, but ultimately, they can't take a player who isn’t ready to play in the group stages.

21 of the 26-man squad played in Euro’s. About this, Southgate said, “if you get to the final of a competition [that was] 18 months ago, there should be a fair amount of stability in terms of what that group were capable of, but also room for people who are playing well to come into the group. People talk about being overly loyal but you’ve got to have some consistency in your thinking because it's hard to build something without consistency. Then others can come in and thrive. Some players will be better for the experience they have.”

When asked what makes this squad stand out, Southgate commented, “We’re excited by the group, there’s a lot of exciting talent within it, but the whole group have got to come together, there’s a lot of challenges. It's a unique situation for everybody - the timing of it and the obstacles, medically as much as anything. We’ve got to adapt better than everybody else”

Southgate also referred to Harry Maguire as “one of our best centre-backs” and commented on how he chose more experienced defenders as the younger ones haven’t done enough to push the more experienced ones out.

When asked about why Tommy Abraham didn’t make the cut, Southgate responded, “Tommy’s had a poor run of scoring form at the wrong time.”

And when asked about James Ward-Prowse, he said “he’s competing with Bellingham and Henderson, maybe Gallagher. I dont see him in the same profile as Rice. He’s just behind those guys, frankly.”
