Legendary London afterparty Fuse took that hazy time on a Sunday when the fun’s supposed to stop to new heights in the last decade, but they’ve since become synonymous with quality house and techno at more ‘normal times’.
One place has been Ibiza, where they’ve taken over Wednesdays at Sankeys with devastating effect in recent times. Their head honcho Enzo Siragusa has consequently become a hotly feted DJ, and with him due to take his audiophile take on house to the Vertigo Festival in Italy in August, we caught up with him for a quick chat.
Hi Enzo. What are you up to right this instance?
Sitting on my balcony in Ibiza going through promos and trying write answers to your questions. I'm dyslexic and hate writing stuff, best I stick to the music!!
You’re due to play the Vertigo festival soon, alongside a veritable feast of talent. How excited are you about playing and who are you looking to seeing whilst you are there?
Really looking forward to it, I love playing in Italy as its where my roots are and I always get a nice reception when I go back to play. Looking forward to hearing Julian Perez, Guti, Randall M, P.Jones, Julian Bomm, Bella Sarris, to name a few. So many cool up & coming artists on the line-up.
Ibiza season is here as well and you’ll be playing week in week out at Sankeys. What can clubbers going to the island expect from your shows there?
It’s my weekly fix where I get to express myself, I get to meander through house and techno and go places with my sets. Above all though clubbers can expect to rave hard to me and the guys on a finely and personally tuned sound system.
Will you be spending anytime taking in the rest of the island? And do you have a top non club related activity to recommend to people heading out there?
I love to chill out on the beach at Cala Vadella, then walk up hill and take in the sunset sitting on the rocks with no one about. You get some awe-inspiring views with es vedra to the left from up there.
Fuse has developed out of after-party culture. Do you think this facet of dance music is a good breeding ground for the more dedicated clubber?
It depends on the party I suppose, it definitely was with Fuse.
You’re a huge believer in the sound being right above all else. Why do you think this is something people cut corners on so frequently?
Because it’s expensive to hire good quality sound systems, equipment and above all experienced sound engineers and spending that money on big DJs and promo probably seems a safer bet. I always choose sound above everything, it’s where it all starts.
What other gigs and productions are forthcoming from you in the future, and what else can we expect form Fuse?
Working on an EP with Alexkid which is quite different, definitely drawing on our d'n'b backgrounds. Also, doing some music with Rich NxT, Seb Zito and Ittetsu. And there are some remixes coming for music on Infuse including a remix for Einzelkind.
And finally, dream situation time. You can go back to any period in clubland history, and play at any club. Who would you have playing alongside you and what tune would you drop that would define the evening?
1994, Helter Skelter at The Sanctuary in Milton Keynes, in the upstairs room alongside Randal, I'd be dropping LTJ Bukems & Peshay's ‘19.5 Reprisal’. It was one of my first raves!
