Essential Listening: House and Techno

Satisfaction - Darius Syrossian, Eve

Sampling Eve’s 2003 hip-hop belter, ‘Satisfaction’, Syrossian made it funky as hell while merging sounds to marry older and contemporary styles into one.

The overall sound, crisp and clear, makes it clear this one’s a new track but those 80s synths are a real throwback. Add the vocal sample and strings; we’ve got sounds from across a few decades in this single track.

Full of energy and attitude, you just know this one’s going to kill on the dancefloor, especially for those who grew up on the Eve song.

Imagine Ourselves - James

Legendary Manchester band, James, released their 1999 Singles & B-Sides album on Friday, blessing their fans with some unreleased music from the year they released their album Millionaires featuring tracks like ‘Just Like Fred Astaire’ and ‘We’re Going To Miss You’.

This haunting piece is the third on the album and features some interesting electronic elements. Produced by a team of producers including Brian Eno, you can certainly hear a bit of his influence on there.

For a band with huge songs like ‘Sit Down’, ‘Laid’, and ‘Waltzing Along’, it’s clear why this one wasn’t more than a B-side but it’s still a solid addition to their powerful discography.

Keep On Skankin - Shy FX and Mr Williamz feat. Double O

Taken from Shy and Williamz’s reggae, DnB, and jungle-packed EP, ‘Rudeboy Design Soundtape’, ‘Keep On Skankin’ is (unsurprisingly) a banger.

If we’re being real, we all knew the EP was going to be incredible way before we heard it. Shy has a reputation for delivering some of the best, most classic tracks in the genre, and we’ve seen that his collaborations with Mr Williamz have always been a good idea.

With ‘Keep On Skankin’, the two plus Double O have managed a tune that straddles the line between wild energy and a chill one you can listen to in the garden with the sun shining down on you. As such, ‘Keep On Skankin’ is whatever you make of it. It can be a relaxing one or a proper rave track. It’s up to you.

Flying Trapeze Act - Boldy James and Conductor Williams

Taken from Boldy James and Conductor Williams’ collab album Across The Tracks, ‘Flying Trapeze Act’ is a melting pot of hip-hop, jazz, and soul stirred by Conductor, who crafted ethereal sounds for James to rhyme over.

Somewhat surreal and hazy, like a fair amount of the album, it’s the kind of record that makes you feel like you’re on a bit of a contact trip. It’s light, flowy, free, and goes where it likes, drifting around peacefully.

If you love that jazzy and soulful hip-hop, check this album out.
