Essential Listening: House and Techno

Back To One - Peggy Gou

DJ, singer, and producer Peggy Gou dropped her debut album on Friday, featuring ‘It Goes Like (Nanana), ‘I Go’, ‘I Believe In Love Again’ with Lenny Kravitz, and ‘Lobster Telephone’. But there are still plenty of tracks on there that we haven’t heard before, including ‘Back To One’.

Packed with 90s vibes from that first synth riff just a few seconds in, the track immediately showcases the trademark sound she’s known and loved for. And with it being the first track on the album - with the exception of the short intro - it’s the perfect way to kick things off. Singing in her mother tongue Korean, the song offers summery carefree vibes - as do a fair few of the other tracks on the album.

Essential Listening: Indie and Alternative

words fell out - Goat Girl

Taken from the post-punk band’s new album Below The Waste, which dropped on Friday, ‘words fell out’ is a very personal and gentle song about the band’s drummer’s struggle with addiction.

Singer and guitarist Lottie said, The song is about the helplessness felt amongst our friends as we attempted to nurture Rosy, a time that felt really hard to find words for. I wrote it to sort through the emotions that are pushed aside in the midst of dealing with a crisis. The opening line ‘I only want the best for you’ is the central theme, not only of the song but also our friendship.”

Melancholic but ethereal, particularly during the vocal harmonies toward the back end of the track, Goat Girl has done it again.

Essential Listening: Drum & Bass and Jungle

Rig Fairy - Brodie, Born On Road feat. Kelvin 373, Selecta J-Man, Aries

DJ, singer, and rapper Broadie is already making waves with her debut single ‘Rig Fairy’ with Born On Road plus special guest DJs/producers Kelvin 373, Selecta J-Man, and Aries.

A scorching debut, the track has already been shared far and wide online. An ode to club culture and drum and bass, ‘Rig Fairy’ starts with reggae drums, guitars, and horns before synths indicate some serious energy is on the way, emphasised by breakbeats before it all kicks off. Full of earworm melodies with lyrics

She’s young and just getting started so we can’t wait to see how Brodie develops with plenty of support around her already.

Essential Listening: Hip-Hop and Jazz

PACKAPUNCH - Joey Valence & Brae feat. Danny Brown

Perhaps best known for their track ‘PUNK TACTICS’, which seemed to be on almost every TikTok video for a good few weeks, Joey Valence & Brae is back with more bangers (including this one, of course) taken from their new album NO HANDS which dropped on Friday.

Hard, gritty, and with plenty of Star Wars and Super Mario references, the two enlisted Detroit rap titan Danny Brown for a verse, preparing us for his appearance like a boxing announcer would announce fighters to the ring.

Adrenaline-pumping and always light-hearted and comical, you should definitely check this album out. Especially if you’re a Beastie Boys fan.
