As part of the Music Management strand of the FACE programme a music industry seminar will be held on Wednesday 11th and Thursday 12th April at The Cumbria Institute Of Arts, Carlisle.

Speakers of the two days are:
Russ Conway has spent over 25 years working in the music industry. In that time he has worked for a variety of major and independent labels, in the key areas of A&R, music publishing, marketing and new media. He now works with the music development agency Generator, and has set up helped set-up NERO (North East Recording Organisation), which is administered by Tees Music Alliance.

Steve Fernie started working at EMI in the 1970s’s. Having worked his way into a senior position in Business Affairs, he then left the company to set up his own label, Cold Harbour, in the 1980’s. He later joined Arista/BMG as Head of Business Affairs, before he (and a partner) acquired Grapevine Distribution (formerly Rio Distribution) in the early 1990’s. He later left BMG to set up the Grapevine label, and then sold this company to set up his current label, East Central One.

David Cooper owns two, Manchester based, music companies. In House Press is a specialist national PR company, whose clients include The Go Team and The Coral. Melodic Records is a label, which houses a mix of Indie guitar acts and contemporary Electronica.  David’s understanding of how to publicise and market new music, has made In House Press a company that is never short of work. Its clients are major and independent labels, form Sony/BMG to Full Time Hobby.

Terry Hollingsworth began his career in the 1980s, as a radio plugger for WEA records, where he worked on acts such as Gary Numan, Madonna, Echo and the Bunnymen and The Cult. In the 1990’s he went onto start his own company (10 X Better) doing press and promotion for acts such as A Guy Called Gerald, and Black. He then set-up and a national dance music distribution company, Deltra Distribution. Within the last 2 years he has relaunched 10 X Better (www.10xbetter.com) as press and promotions company and booking agency, in Newcastle, and is currently developing a national distribution company (www.ndndistribution.co.uk) to help develop and raise the profile of new labels and artists in the North East.

The course promises to be a hugely fascinating and informative 2 days, and is open to both sexes, remember the music business isn’t exclusively a male preserve, although as ever places are limited. Anyone interested is I urged to apply as soon as possible. Those completing the 2-day course will be accredited with a Level 2 NVQ through the Open College Network once participants produce a small portfolio of work, which documents how their personal project has progressed.
