Bastion of Jamaican culture, Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley, is bringing his unique blend of reggae and dancehall to O2 Academy Sheffield on Thursday 30th May.
It takes an artist with a remarkably astute vision to stand clear of the shadow cast by Bob Marley in the realm of reggae, not least for his youngest son Damian Marley. And yet Damian’s career has been marked by success after success, forging a path that both respects and moves past his father’s legacy.
It was Marley’s third album, Welcome to Jamrock, that solidified his status within the UK. Beyond its killer titular single, the record brought reggae firmly into the modern era, fusing it with hip-hop, dancehall, and electronic production techniques to create something fresh and singular.
Since then he’s released a collaborative album with rap legend Nas, scooped up three Grammy awards, and even branched into dubstep (a genre itself influenced by dancehall and dub) on a track with Skrillex. His last record, Stony Hill, was released in 2017, so expect a live show consisting of a blend from across his whole career
