Goodgreef is fast approaching a consequential milestone - 15 years of throwing legendary parties. One artist that has played a pivotal part in making the events over the years unforgettable is Eddie Halliwell.
A regular at some of the biggest Goodgreef get-togethers, Halliwell has unleashed his wizardry and infectious energy behind the decks at the likes of the Goodgreef tenth birthday party and the Tall Trees events, and it only seems suitable that he leads the toast to another five years.
In preparation for the birthday party at Victoria Warehouse in Manchester, we asked Eddie Halliwell to reminisce and pick five stand out moments from the parties he's played and name the tracks that made those moments so special.
This one takes me back to Goodgreef’s birthday at Warehouse Project in Manchester back in 2007. I will never forget the first time I was introduced to this absolute gem (thanks go out to Ernest and Phil at Prime). I used to go and visit various different record distribution companies to hunt down new music and I remember trawling through racks of records at Prime in London. This is where I came across this beast.
When I first heard it I was like ‘wow this is ridiculous!'. If you used to go vinyl shopping you know the feeling that I mean, that feeling you’d get when found a track you’d been searching high and low for. When searching for music on vinyl you had to put a lot more effort in to find what you were after.
These days music is far more accessible and finding great tracks is just a few clicks away, which is a good thing. But it some ways makes it more disposable and takes away that butterfly feeling you used to get when you land on something. This one still gets aired from time to time and sounds just as good today as it did back then.
I first heard this after a long session going through promos and I remember thinking 'should I stick this one in the box or not?' I thought I’d give it a whirl that weekend and ended up playing it out - what a reaction!
It was a lesson learned and it's something that sticks with me today: take breaks between long sessions as your ears become fatigued causing you to miss things when listening to music, especially when working in the studio. This one became a regular in my sets and particularly reminds me of Goodgreef’s birthday at 53 Degrees in Preston back in 2010.
I remember hearing this on a Carl Cox mix and thinking 'I need to get hold of this track!' (like many tracks in a Coxy mix). It’s another one I still dig out from time to time and it's always well received.
Such a simple track: looped up techno with a relentless driving bass line. It sounds great on a big system and causes complete devastation. I have many memories attached to this one but one in particular was hearing Renato play it himself at the Academy in Manchester for Goodgreef back in 2005.
A techno bomb! This is another track that takes me back to Goodgreef’s birthday in 2007 at Warehouse Project. You really feel this on a big sound system and it’s a track perfect for the Store Street club environment. This is one of those a records I can’t put to bed and it’s been used a fair few times to round up a good night. When people are chanting for one more, give them a bit of this, wallop! I’ve lost count the number of times I’ve played it.
Marcel has produced some club gems over the years but this has to be my favourite. It’s an unmistakable track to many and a massive anthem that takes me back to the Goodgreef days at Tall Trees in Yarm. It’s a track that holds many memorable moments, including watching the crowd’s reaction when that huge lead hits, creating a sea of hands in the air.
